ETHICAL DILEMMA

Below are several situations that present ethical questions in a business.

Analyze the situation:

(a) from the strictly legal viewpoint

(b) from a moral and ethical viewpoint (personal and organizational), and

(c) from the point of view of what is best in the long run for the company.

Think of yourself as a manager of the company and be sure to consider both short‑ and long‑range consequences. Also look at each situation from the perspective of all stakeholders (groups concerned: customers, stockholders, employees, government, and community).

A disgruntled employee of your major competitor mails top‑secret information or new product samples to you.  What would you do and why?

Hint: This is a business situation and requires that you respond to it from your personal and a business perspective.

Bombora

the whole topic: While surfing can be seen as part of Australian identity, many also see it as a job and a business.  Based on your viewing of the documentary Bombora and your own research, analyse how and why surfing has emerged as a global business and how its iconic status is used to sell products.

Critical thinking Topic: Literary Analysis: "Passing" by Nella Larsen

You can focus on the military issues, commanders, political leaders (including their wartime powers), diplomatic issues, or the lives of ordinary soldiers. At the same time, topics dealing with the homefront (role of women, wartime dissent, legal aspects of the particular war or more specific things like food shortages such as in the South during the Civil War)This paper requires that you consult at least four primary sources. These can be four seperate documents out of the Voices of Freedom book, four newspaper articles or some combination of the varius examples I mentioned in the previous paragraph. Some possibilities are provided here.

IN ADDITION, you need to include at least two secondary sources that are peer reviewed pieces (articles, books, etc.) written by historians (or someone else functioning as one). You must include sources other than your textbook (or any other textbook). The discussions prior to the documents in the Voices of Freedom reader do not count as well. Since online encyclopedias like Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, they are not valid secondary sources.

Business Analysis

Find at least five recent articles about difficulties the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has had related to its supply chain.

Explain the general nature of the supply chain approach that Boeing used for its 787 Dreamliner.  (Where do the main components come from?  Did Boeing build them? How did Boeing control the entire process?)

Identify and explain specific challenges and difficulties that Boeing encountered related to its supply chain (One of these is recent problems with its lithium batteries).

Reference specific articles to indicate where you obtained the information about specific supply chain problems.

Evaluation of a Business Code of Ethics

Each business should have a framework for ensuring ethical behavior. The structure, format, and scope of codes vary depending on the company’s business. An oil company’s code, for example, would probably have different criteria and emphases than a health care provider’s code of ethics. Sometimes, codes of ethics are called by other names, such as an employee code of conduct. A code of ethics, though, should be differentiated from standard good operating practices.

Evaluation and analysis includes problem solving and behavior in assessing organizational ethics along with decision-making processes. In this case, you are evaluating your own company’s code of ethics, or that of another company if your employer does not have a code of ethics.

elements and requirements of a valid contract

The Final Research Paper should address a topic that is connected to the content of this course (elements and requirements of a valid contract; issues related to real and personal property; intellectual property; employment law; and/or, international law and the global marketplace.)  This paper should focus on a legal issue or situation that relates to a business environment or activity with a focus on the legal impact technology has on this issue. Ideally, this topic would concern a matter that you have experienced or that you have knowledge of; however, this not a requirement, only a suggestion. Apply the legal concepts and ethical considerations discussed in this course to your chosen topic. At a minimum this paper should include:
A detailed description of the topic.
An analytical discussion of the legal issues that are involved. This would entail examining the issue from different viewpoints.
A discussion of ethical considerations (Remember: What is legal may not be ethical).
A discussion of the legal impact technology has on this issue.
A well defined and logically stated argument to support your position. This would include any suggestion or ideas for improvement in this area of law.
