Paradigm shift

CRITICAL THINKING ESSAY ASSIGNMENT

As I explained earlier in class, the purpose of this essay assignment is analyze a paradigm shift (fundamental changes in your interpretive framework) in your own life, that is to say, to evaluate critically the ways that your underlying beliefs, assumptions, values, attitudes, and attitudes were transformed as a result of an experience.

Be sure to provide an analysis rather than a narrative or description of your shift.  The following questions will help you formulate your thoughts as you work on your paper:

  • What were your fundamental assumptions, beliefs, values, etc. before and after your shift?
  • In what ways did these beliefs, assumptions, values and attitudes shape or influence your actions and views prior to your shift?  How did their failure to guide you lead to your shift (what contradictions or inconsistencies surfaced)?
  • How did you initially attempt to rationalize these contradictions or inconsistencies?  What insights emerged from these failed rationalizations?
  • How did your paradigm crisis emerge?  How and why did you realize that your framework had reached a crossroads?
  • How did you move beyond your previous framework?
  • How did your shift accommodate your new beliefs, assumptions, attitudes and values as well as some of your previous ones?  In other words, what changed and did not change in your shift?

Your essay will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • The clarity of your ideas and thoughts.
  • The extent to which the organization of your essay promotes an understanding of your points.
  • The clearness of your writing, including its attention to grammar, and quality of your presentation (the avoidance of typographical, spelling, pagination, or other types of errors).
  • The use of illustrations, examples, specifics, and details of your analytical points.
  • The clarity of the segmentation and analysis of your shift, that is, the clearness in the identification and evaluation of the various aspects or features of your paradigm shift.
  • The development of your points and the cohesiveness of your analysis (the connections between and among your points should be clear).

Hypothetical Revolution In Cuba

Selection A: A Tale of Two Cities Revolution Essay
A Tale of Two Cities describes the impact of a revolution across all aspects of
civilization. The novel recounts the response to the fall of the elite by all levels of society
during the French Revolution as represented by specific characters. Your job is to
create a hypothetical revolution of your own in a current country.
Unlike A Tale of Two Cities, your selected country need not have unequal wealth
distribution. Your chosen country’s imbalance may be based on gender, culture, religion, appearance, etc. You will need to research the current structure of the selected
country’s government and society so that you are able to clearly explain the inequalities
and their impact.
Since you are proposing a hypothetical revolution, it will not be possible to
provide exact numbers regarding the casualties and details regarding the resulting
government but you can easily make predictions based on similar historical uprisings.
Your revolution must follow the socioeconomic skeleton of most revolutions:
• There must be a large gap between the available opportunities for two distinct groups
• There must be a disparity in freedoms, either forced or voluntary, between two distinct groups
• There must be a perceived injustice
• There must be an uprising
• There must be casualties
• There must be a resolution
• There must be a working government prior to the revolution and a working
government after the revolution
Your revolution must be realistic. You must provide enough data/information to
support your assertions and predictions. You must provide enough information about the day-to-day lives of both your groups prior to the revolution and after the revolution.
Since the goal of your resolution is a stable ruling body, your new government must be
one that would be welcomed in the country you selected by the inhabitants

Design a selection procedure (interview, job sample performance test(s), cognitive ability test(s), personality inventory, a polygraph, reference checks, a physical exam if appropriate

Design a selection procedure (interview, job sample performance test(s), cognitive ability test(s), personality inventory, a polygraph, reference checks, a physical exam if appropriate, etc.—whatever approaches you think might be appropriate) for your organization (or one that you are familiar with) for an entrance level managerial job. Be sure to build your selection procedures around the job analysis results that you obtained from the previous assignment; specifying where you are tapping what tasks with what selection procedures.  Be sure to discuss the nature of the managerial job first, and then build a procedure that has multiple parts, being sure to discuss what is known about the reliability, validity, utility and the legal concerns you might have with each part of the procedure. Finally, be sure to discuss the strategic importance of each part of the procedure for the organization (why you might be recommending each part). This document should be approximately 8 pages long, double spaced, with appropriately formatted (APA) citations and bibliography. You might need to do some research on this outside of your text.

Water for Profit

  1. Choose a country whose information is listed on the site. Read through them and see which resonates most with you. Summarize their current situation from the standpoint of water.  Use these questions as guidelines (not all may apply).

a. Is this a developed or developing nation in need of international loans?

b. What corporations are attempting to control its water supply and why?

c. Is this a infrastructure problem (poorly funded/too few pipelines or treatment plants) or a funding problem (too few taxes to develop and a maintain water delivery system)?

d. Is this a water-wealthy or water-impoverished country?  Is anyone buying land to “own” the rights to the groundwater?

You’ll need to do some research to determine the country’s current situation regarding their water. Your summary of the situation should be limited to about 750 words.

  1. Compare this country’s situation to our water systems in Canada. What similarities or differences do you see?
  2. Finally, research whether or not you think Canada has, or at some point should, privatize some of its municipal water supplies (water filtration, sewage treatment or both).  Try to balance the pros and cons of this against efficiency, safety, conservation.
