Context: Description of Topic and Students

Part A: Introduce yourself, your context (which may include but is not limited to information about your school, district, classroom, students, content, and curriculum) and describe the process of deep reflection on classroom practice you used to define your passion and topic of study. This background information will provide relevant information to the readers of your plan. Important Note: This is not an autobiography, but an explanation of your current role, a description of the students involved, and why the topic you chose is important to you.

Remember: Choose a passion for your Research Plan that you can later implement with students in Major Assessment: Problem-Based Research.
Part B: Write a literature review related to your topic of study that includes critical analysis from at least three but no more than five cited references. Helpful resources for writing a literature review are included in the Learning Resources. Be mindful of the following questions in developing a quality literature review:
? What research did you review to investigate your passion or wondering?
? Did you use reputable sources such as peer-reviewed journals and editor-published references?
? Were your resources current (less than five years)?
? Did you follow the advice and recommendations given in the Literature Review resources?
Remember: You are required to use at least three but no more than five primary resources.
Part C: In this week’s Resources you learned that defining your wondering can be the most difficult, yet rewarding, aspect of your teacher inquiry process. It is driven by your professional teaching experience combined with real-world dilemmas. In this part of the paper, state your initial and revised wondering question and how your colleagues’ feedback and/or the literature review led you to the revised version. Also, include any subquestions that you may have added to increase the depth of your wondering.

To help guide you in selecting and writing wondering questions, refer to these helpful tools located in this week’s Learning Resources:

1. Wondering Passion Exercises—A Practice Tool
2. 50 Examples of Wonderings
3. Litmus Test Wondering Game
Making a Plan
Now that you have refined your wondering question, you will need to develop or design an “action” to implement in your classroom. Describe a strategy, intervention, or some other action that you might implement to address the problem you identified in your wondering. Explain the change(s) you plan to make in your teaching, your classroom, or your outreach to improve learning.

Submit Parts A, B, and C in Week 3. Remember to write in APA format and include a title page, in-text citations, and a reference page. You will submit this assignment (including Parts A, B, and C) for a grade.

Finding Your Wondering

As you learned from this week’s Learning Resources, teacher wonderings provide a strong foundation for meaningful classroom research. Close your eyes and think about your classroom practice and your students or bring to mind a particular classroom of students in your school. What keeps you up at night? What frustrates you? What would you like to change? Reflect on the Eight Passions exercises that you explored to focus your wondering development. Consider the information presented in the “Dial-A-Researcher” teacher interviews, “Litmus Test Wondering Game,” and research articles. With this information in mind, develop several wonderings that would pass the litmus test and guide a robust research exploration in your classroom.

Rhetorical Analysis

Assignment Overview
Since much of our understanding about critical categories of difference— race, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ability, culture—comes from this popular medium, analyzing TV depictions more closely can lend valuable insight into how our language and understanding of different groups is shaped or affirmed. Your goal for this assignment is to rhetorically analyze a television show from the perspective of examining how one or more of the critical categories is portrayed on the show and how those portrayals function within culture. Some characters and situations may cross boundaries between categories and your analysis may focus on one or more of these categories as they are relevant to the particular argument you make. The final analysis will be an essay of 800 – 1000 words and will include at least two relevant visuals.
Completing the Assignment
Part of this assignment will require a brief description of the show; its overall premise and characters will need to be described. Also, you will need to focus your analysis in some way. For example, you could chose to discuss a particular character, a relationship between two characters, a way in which the show regularly depicts a certain group or situation, the show’s premise, etc. The main goal of your analysis should be to look critically at the messages (both overt and hidden) that the show sends in regards to the critical categories and how those messages are functioning within the show itself and in the culture overall.
This assignment will be completed in four stages:
1. Submit a typed thesis statement .In your thesis statement, you should identify the show you chose, the critical category (or categories) you will examine for the show and a claim you will argue in your paper.
2. A final draft of the essay
All stages must be completed to receive full credit for the assignment.
Some critical questions to ask as you analyze the show:
• Are the depictions of the critical categories realistic or stereotypical? Do they look like real people? How?
• Are these depictions harmful? Useful? How? Why?
• How are the characters’ identities (eg. Gender, race etc.) important to the roles that they play (or are they)?
• Are images, ideas, and language in society being shaped or affirmed by the depictions you see on TV? How? Give examples.
• Do you see any mixed messages being presented? If so, explain.
• Why might the producers/writers/studios/etc. want to present the characters and situations the way they do? What social/historical context helped shaping the producer’s decision?
• What role does visual language (eg. Close-ups, video angles, colors, costumes, clothing etc.) play in the representation of the characters?
• What role does music and sound effects play in the representation of the characters?
