Wondering

Wondering

Wonderings may culminate into positive outcome in relations to improving the classroom experience for the teachers (Anderson, O’Connor, & Greene, 2006). They can also culminate and provide a guide to robust research exploration in a classroom. This paper presents a number of wonderings that would be effective in guiding in research exploration and how they reflect a passion in professional life today.

The three wonderings  that I  can use for action research in my classroom are; what are the strategies that a teacher can employ to ensure that student’s attitude is enhanced in their classroom, how can slower learners’ be handled to ensure that they also perform well like their counterparts?  and how can the students with special needs in the classroom be attended to and made to feel comfortable in the classroom situation to enhance their learning?

These three wonderings are important and viable in guiding the research to ensure that I improve my classroom experience. In the current learning institutions, students have different abilities and some of them have various disabilities that require special attention (Zeteroglu et al. 2012).  Such students in most of the time are disadvantaged from the learning process.  The current training of teachers does not provide enough training on how to handles students with special need (Johnson & Kuerten Dellagnelo, 2013). Furthermore, the current needs  whereby teachers are required to sign  performance contracts has worsened the situation as teachers target those students that are performing well. They leave the slow learners and those with special needs to struggle on their own because of the perceptions that they cannot perform well (Buchanan, 2012) Therefore, these wondering will help to dig deeper in finding out why these disparities happens and the way forward.   Student attitude towards learning and towards their teachers is also another aspect that affects the performance of the student s overall. It is therefore prudent that this is investigated to find out the best strategies that can be used to ensure that the attitude of students towards leaning and towards their teachers is improved to enhance learning.  Class environment can only be enjoyable and fulfilling if students are able to interact freely with their teachers, ask questions, and even engage in constructive debates with their teachers (McVicker, 2009). Strategies that can be applied to foster learning may include commending them for the  good  thing they have done,  encouraging them to ask questions, allowing them  time,  express themselves so as they feel that the teacher  is not  a person to  fear  but an individual to assist them understand various learning concepts.

These three wonderings are a clear reflection of my professional life today.  Currently I do believe that learning is an opportunity for the students not just to acquire academic skills and knowledge but is a multifaceted concept that requires that students learn social skills to be able to understand how to interact with the entire society. Therefore, this is why I do believe that,   teachers must adopt to strategies that allow the students to feel part of the learning and to participate in learning process well.   If students can be able to feel free to ask teachers questions without fear and feelings of intimidations then, classroom environment can be enhanced.  It is also important to recognize and embrace the fact that slow learners and students with special indeed have the capability and right to be taught just like the other students (Wise & Usdan, 2013). That is why I would ensure that in my teaching I also attend to their learning needs to help them achieve their goals.

Education is important in our society and it is the responsibilities of the teachers to ensure that they create a conducive environment to help the learners to understand the concepts and feel at home even as they acquire their skills.

Description of Topic and Students

Description of Topic and Students

Part A

I am a religious education teacher in a local primary school where I enjoy teaching the young children and have a great passion to see that every child benefits in class at an individual level rather than at the general level. My school is named St. John primary school in Vitaya district and the school has a total population of five hundred pupils. I teach in class seven south and the class has a total of thirty pupils both girls and boys. The ratio of boys to girls is 3:2.the curriculum of the school is an eight subject course throughout the primary school period. These subjects are mathematics, English, Swahili, science, religious education, home economics and business studies. Every student must study these eight subjects in every class in the eight year period. My passion in teaching involves understanding individual pupils so that I can be able to understand the whole class (Ames, & Archer, 1988). This is linked to my topic of study which how individual performance of students affect the whole performance of a class. This involves studying and carrying out an analysis of individual pupils in order to be able to separate each child from the crowd and be able to treat them accordingly. Since a class is composed of different children from diverse cultures and families, I saw it necessary to understand every pupil individually so as to understand their behavior and performance in class (Ames, & Archer, 1988).

My wondering question that led me towards carrying this research and having the passion to understand students individually is; how can I better the performance of each child in class considering that these children are unique from one another (Biskup, 2008). The other wondering question  is what would be the most effective method of teaching that would ensure that need of all the pupils are met. Finally, how can a teacher engage parents into improving the performance of their children?

My current roles in the school are a teacher and at the same time an academic master. Holding these two positions in the school gives me a good chance to interact with the students and their parents and therefore I am able to research about every child and am able to put into place measures that can improve each child (Ames, & Archer, 1988).

The classroom practice that I used to construct my passion is the three principles that ensure inclusion of pupils. Thus engagement helps me to understand each child and to know how they even interact with their mates. I choose to use these three principles from the understanding that the original behavior of a person is portrayed when one is among their peers. These three principles included setting suitable challenges that match every child. This ensures that every child is given a chance to experience success or failure by handling a difficult situation. The other principle is responding to the diverse learning needs of pupils. This ensured that I interacted with pupils across a diverse encounter (de Valenzuela, 2006).

When planning the goals for a class, the teacher needs to set high standards that can be attained by every pupil. In this case, before setting the goals, one has to consider the needs of both genders, special needs such as disability, social and cultural backgrounds, and different ethnic backgrounds. In order to understand pupils individually, a teacher is expected to do a number of things (de Valenzuela, 2006). First, create an effective learning environment. Second, secure the motivation and concentration of each child so that students feel that they all have equal opportunity. The third thing is using different teaching approaches to ensure equality for all students. Forth, application of the right assessment approaches. Fifth, a teacher has to set a target for every learning activity. The third principle is overcoming the potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of students. This principle is used on the basis that some students have needs that require the use of special learning and assessment requirements.

For example, the curriculum has provisions for ranking and passes mark points for students with disabilities.

In the past, pupils have been seen to be equal and teachers went on to teach without acknowledging the fact that every pupil is unique. The curriculum had been set without considering pupils with special needs and this was discriminative. Students with disabilities has for a long time been taught together with other students who do not have any disabilities or even seen as lesser pupils (Thompson, 1999).  The change in the curriculum has led to overcoming the barriers to barriers to effective teaching. The personal interaction between the teachers and the pupils also helps teachers to easily identify any abnormality that a pupil could be having. Current research shows that the relationship between the pupils and the teachers to an individual level has helped raise the education standards. In this way, the teachers are able to know how different pupils should be treated and also know what targets need to be set for pupils as individuals and the class as a whole. By understanding individual students, teachers are able to understand the whole class which is very important in teaching. The research also shows that the understanding of pupils personally establishes a good learning environment (Thompson, 1999).

Part B

Literature review

In discussing my topic of choice, I choose to use a case study and articles on educational research in order to understand pupil performance and the factors that affect this performance. The Australian council of education journal discusses a review of the empirical evidence identifying effective interventions that are used to address learning difficulties in class. The addresses difficulties are the key effects to student’s performance. This review is based on the standards of the American government that ensures that every student is able to achieve acceptable standards of literacy and numeracy (Timperley, et al 2009). This article focuses on the learning difficulties that students are faced with during learning and how they can be handled to ensure quality performance. According to this article, students with disabilities are those who have learning difficulties because of intellectual, sensory, physical, social/emotional, or multiple impairments. It is important to have a clear understanding of an effective classroom practice is necessary for a teacher to teach effectively and get a positive class performance. This also helps in bridging the gap between high scholars and low scholars so that there can be a balance in class performance. Failure to harmonize student performances can be destructive to performance because it could means that some students will feel left out and that their teachers are not interested in their performance (Timperley, et al 2009).

According to this article, the learner is an active contributor to the learning process and paying attention to individual students can manipulate them to perform better. The teaching process should be student-centered to ensure that the interest and welfare of the student is given the first priority. Embracing a constructivism approach in education ensures that all the needs of the students are met and also ensures good performance. Direct instruction can also be used to improve performance especially in instructing small groups then moving on to individuals. This close interaction gives the teacher a chance to analyze every student individually and understand their individual capabilities. Moreover, for a teacher to understand every student’s capabilities, they might be required to use self regulation strategies for students so that their personal performances can be determined.

The other article used in literature review is the independent learning: literature review which discusses the importance of independent learning to students. In this article, is explained the independent learning consists of personalized and student-centered learning. Independent learning ensures that the student-teacher roles and relationships and communication in learning are taken care of in the learning and teaching process. Good performance in class is affected by both internal and external factors outside the classroom (Biskup, 2008). The external factors involve establishing strong relationships between students and teachers and establishing an enabling learning environment. This review found out that independent learning for students improves academic performance, increases motivation and confidence, helps students to be more self aware and they are able to manage their limitations, makes it possible for teachers to provide differential tasks for children, and fosters social inclusion by countering alienation. Evidence shows that in schools where this approach is used, there is 100% performance with students attaining A-C grades (Biskup, 2008).

Supporting students in self regulation, providing feedback and helping them to state their progress improves performance especially students with special needs. Independent learning is base on establishing a positive relationship between students and teachers based on trust.

The other article that I used in the literature review is the Teacher Education for Inclusion which an international literature review developed by the European Agency for Development in Special Needs Education. This research was carried out in 2010. This article argues that the teacher has certain knowledge and understanding about the special needs of different learners and therefore, he/she can use teaching techniques and curriculum strategies that take care of every students needs (Donnelly, & Watkins, 2010).  The review assumes that a teacher for inclusion has the ability to teach in an environment that is diverse in terms of age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic, cultural, linguistic or religious background, socio-economic status, disability or special educational needs. The key principles that should be used in the education set up as discussed in this article are; widening participation to increase educational opportunity for all learners, education and training in inclusive education provided to all teachers, support structures should be set up to promote inclusion and policies should be developed that promote inclusion (Donnelly, & Watkins, 2010).

The articles that I used for this review are recent thus providing reliable information today. The first article was produced in 2009, the second 2008 and the third was produces in 2010. Therefore, the data provided here is still applicable and has not been updated. This information is also reliable because it contains research about students and teachers and teaching and learning in general. These articles also provide information about the kind of a relationship that is necessary in order to improve class performance and understand pupils and students individually.

Part C

My wondering questions were how I would improve each child’s performance considering that each child is unique from one another, what teaching techniques can be used to ensure that the needs of every child are met and how could I involve the parents in improving the performance of every child. The refined question is what makes the performance of one child different from the other. In this question, one carries out an analysis to determine whether the teaching techniques used are suitable for all the children, and the effects of the personal relationship between the child and the teacher on their performance (Schmidt, 1983). Having answers to the refined questions helps in knowing how a teacher can relate individually with every child in order to understand their needs and capabilities in class. This question leads the teacher into investigating every child individually in order to understand the whole class. The teacher sees the need to know why the top performers perform highly; why average performers perform so and why low performers perform poorly (Schmidt, 1983).

The literature review helped in refining the wondering question because it gave me a wider understanding of the teaching scope. The performance in class can be influenced by external and internal factors and these must be considered in order to improve the performance of the class. The literature review provides useful knowledge about the principles of ensuring good performance in the class and how providing a good learning environment can improve pupil’s performance. Understanding the diversity that can exist in a single class is the first step to improving the performance of a class. A teacher has to know that at no one time will students perform equally but some actions can be taken to improve the performance of each child and eventually the performance of the whole class (Leithwood, & Riehl, 2003). These steps include using various teaching approaches so as to ensure that all the needs of different students are met, providing a good learning environment, establishing a good relationship with the students and involving the parents in the learning process. The parents should be involved because they could be having information about their children that the teacher may not be able to get and they can also be used to help students identify their weaknesses and work on them.

In order to address the wondering question, it is necessary to come up with a strategy that solves the problem portrayed in the wondering question (Leithwood, & Riehl, 2003). This strategy is providing different teaching approaches that pay attention to additional learning and special needs of the students. These approaches should be in a position to address the needs of the student as an individual, in their family and also in their schools. These strategy may be short term or going out throughout schooling. They may relate to stunts disabilities of difficulties in learning or behavior that could be as a result of different factors.

A student based strategy is the best approach ensuring that individual needs of each child are known by the teacher and addressed. Another approach that can be used is a one-to one approach. These teaching approaches ensure that the programs put in place for learning provide additional support for students with disabilities and special needs. Moreover, these strategies are aimed at harmonizing the performance of all the students so that the top performing can also be shown how they can help the low performers and in that way, the differences in performance will at least be close (Haycock,1998). These programs include specialist services and programs targeted for individual students and programs that provide specialist resources to schools to support students who have learning difficulties. However, it is a bit challenging for teachers to understand the diverse learning needs of students in class and they are required to use the right approaches in addressing these needs. This calls for high level expertise and professionalism on the side of the teacher.

Positive teacher-student relationship can be established by the teacher communicating positive expectation that the students are expected to meet, provide equal opportunities to students, correcting students in a constructive way, demonstrating caring, and preventing frustrations for students (Haycock,1998).

These strategies are easy to implement since they can be easily applied in class. Communicating positive expectations to the student helps in ensuring that a student is working to reach a specific target. In this way the student will work toward some specific goal that is set considering their personal needs, strengths and weaknesses. Providing equal response opportunities for children ensure that all students are treated equally and therefore the performances do not differ greatly. This helps students to have self confidence in their abilities when the teacher gives them a chance to give the right answer. This also ensures that not only the top performing students are called upon to do tasks in the class (Schmidt, 1983).

In order to understand the needs of a student, the teacher needs to communicate that they understand the student’s feelings, let the students know that you treat them the same and also help the student to verbalize their own needs and feelings. Demonstrating care to students is another great way of building a positive relationship with the students. This improves the student’s performance greatly. Care can be demonstrated by showing interest in the student’s personal life, listening to the students and empathizing with them (Good, Gruba, & Kaminski, 2002).

There some changes that I plan to make in my class to improve the performance of every child. These changes include meeting with every child and their parent of an academic basis so that I can be able to understand each child’s needs. Another change is creating a positive learning environment where all students feel that they are equal and that they are responsible for performing excellently well (Good, Gruba, & Kaminski, 2002). Providing equal chances especially in answering questions helps in ensuring that all the students go at the same pace with the teacher. These changes will ensure that a teacher is able to interact with students at a personal level and understand what can be provided to ensure they improve their performance. The improvement of each student eventually leads to good performance of the whole class.

Decision Making Processes at Virgin Atlantic

Decision Making Processes at Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is a multinational company of British origin trading as Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited. Virgin group owns majority of the shares in the organization. Sir Richard Branson is the owner of Virgin Group (John, 2009). Fifty one percent of the Virgin Atlantic is owned by the virgin group while the remainder is owned by Delta Air Lines. The headquarters of virgin Atlantic is based in Crawley, West Sussex in the United Kingdom. Virgin Atlantic dates back to 1984; the operating bases are at Gatwick Airport, Manchester Airport and London Heathrow Airport (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). The organization has developed a flying club for the frequent flyers. Virgin Atlantic currently owns forty fleets, flying to over thirty four destinations. The current people are Sir Richard Branson as the president, Stephen Murphy as the chairman and Craig Kreeger as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Estimates of 2013 indicated revenue of 2.9 billion pounds (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). This paper reflects ate the decision making processes within Virgin Atlantic.

Richard Branson has set rules on decision making processes within Virgin Atlantic, which is critical in the running of the organization and to other stakeholders like Delta Airlines (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). Branson’s art of decision making comprises of four major principles identifying with trusting own instincts, focusing on target customers and not criticizing customers, supporting teams and knowing when to exit or say goodbye (John, 2009).

It has been noted that entrepreneurs and chief executives have the responsibilities of making major decisions within organizations that influence the destiny of the organizations. Branson argues that supporting the stakeholders is critical for the success of the organization. Running of Virgin Atlantic on day to day basis is facilitated by effective decision making processes (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). Branson indicated that game changing decisions have the possibility of resulting to break or a competitive edge over the competitors.

Branson strongly trusts his instincts, Branson is a daredevil and has dared expensive markets and highly competitive markets and made ends meet. Virgin Atlantic is an example of a daring business, the industry was dominated by the state owned British airways, but Branson dared to initiate an airline (John, 2009). In the same concept, Branson has developed highly competitive teams that have responsibility of making the day to day running of Virgin Atlantic.

Launching of Virgin Atlantic and virgin Blue (Australia) was characterized with difficult decision making processes. The competitors had resources and experience, concrete decisions made by Branson’s teams yielded the desired results. Branson felt that complacency was the order of the day at the competitor airlines, an indication that they were not adopting to change as it happened in the business environment. Branson and the group engaged the right focus, energy, flair and attitude (John, 2009).

Decision making processes focus at the satisfaction of the target customers and never criticizing customers. Venturing at the tough markets was not easy, and Virgin Atlantic had to engage calculated expansion, basing on the available information on the complex markets. Virgin Atlantic decision making processes supports best value for the customers, best service and innovative products.

Branson strongly supports teams involvement in the decision making processes, it has been noted that Branson stepped out of the day to day running of Virgin Atlantic so that he could focus at the main opportunities and challenges facing Virgin Atlantic (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). Quitting the day to day running of Virgin Atlantic by Branson meant that he trusted the teams involved in the management processes. Branson always supports new opportunities as ways of expanding the airline to the tapped and untapped markets.

Branson and the group have developed mechanism of understanding when to say goodbye or quit. Branson engage consultants in knowing time to quite, it has been noted that as the founder of the organization, it means that he is very attached to the teams and to the business, to a point that he may not realize when the organization is not selling (Shapira, 2002). An example of quitting is when Branson transferred ownership of Virgin records to EMI, and the proceeds were used in the expansion of Virgin Atlantic, this happened in 1992.

Decision making processes involves making choosing an action among possible alternatives that are competing. Branson believes that decision making processes at the end results to a choice, which must be implemented in Virgin Atlantic in realizing the target objectives and goals (John, 2009). Virgin Atlantic supports a number of stages that are engaged in the decision making processes. Stages are establishing the objectives, classifying objectives according to their order of merit, developing alternative actions, evaluating alternatives against the objectives, choosing tentative decision from the alternative that supports majority of the decisions, evaluating tentative decision in accordance to possible consequences, taking decisive, addressing possible problems or challenges and finally developing a production plan (Shapira, 2002).

Virgin Atlantic supports effective planning before embarking on critical decision making processes, it has been noted that planning enables decisions to be made in a smart and comfortable way (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). Planning has four major benefits identifying with making independent goals, planning acts as a standard used in the measurement of the desired objectives, planning has the capability of converting values into important actions within the organization and planning ensures that the organization engages minimal resources.

Decision making stages at Virgin Atlantic involves orientation stage, conflict stage, emergence stage and reinforcement stage. The steps of decision making processes involves establishing the community, dealing with perceptions, addressing diverse interpretations, making judgment, encouraging motivation for change, taking action and reflecting on the actions (John, 2009). Decision making processes in Virgin Atlantic is not an easy task, since the organization is a multinational organization operating in different environments. Branson argues that there is no one piece of decision making processes that suits all organizations. There are a number of factors to be considered while making decisions.

Moral decision making is concerned on setting rules that modify the behavior of people, while they are at social settings. Moral considers doing ‘no harm’ but doing ‘good’, and to some extent, moral in Virgin Atlantic sets standards within the organization. Virgin Atlantic has been critical in developing a shared vision, which shapes the actions taken in the decision making processes (Virgin-atlantic.com, 2013). Moral values in Virgin Atlantic reflect on shared values that are encroached within the organizational culture. Shared values are critical in making teams agree on the course of actions to be taken by the organization. Moral in decision making processes gear at points of agreement and room for disagreement. Moral standards in Virgin Atlantic have facilitated ethical decision making processes within the organization (Shapira, 2002).

Kohlberg’s theory of moral development could be applied as an ethical theory in analyzing the issues within Virgin Atlantic (Bergling, 2001). It has been noted that moral development has gained support in the twenty first century, particularly in education and in psychology. Lawrence Kohlberg is the brains behind Kohlberg’s Theory of moral development, which is critical in expressing moral reasoning in human beings, which is vital in decision making processes of Virgin Atlantic.

According to Piaget, the moral development is comprised of two stages (Bergling, 2001). Kohlberg’s theory on the other hand expanded the work of Piaget to incorporate a six stage model on moral development. Level one is comprised of pre-conventional morality, stage two comprises of convectional morality and stage three on post-convectional morality. Stage one is characterized with punishment and obedience and exchange and individualism.  Stage three focuses at the interpersonal relationships, stage four deals with maintaining social order, stage five is on individual rights and social contract and stage six focuses on universal principles (Bergling, 2001). Incorporating Kohlberg’s theory is critical in ethical decision making processes.

Decision making processes are very critical in Virgin Atlantic, which determines building a competitive edge or losing opportunities. Making good decisions incorporates preparing an organization for changes (Shapira, 2002). The current business environment is very dynamic; an indication that Virgin Atlantic must develop models of adapting to the global changes in seizing opportunities that comes with changes. Making sound decisions in an organization needs experience, good information and knowledge of interpreting information in a meaningful manner. Decision making processes is not a one person attribute but requires participations of the teams (John, 2009). This is an indication that teamwork and team spirit is critical in making efficient and ethical decisions. Consulting is critical in seeking expertise and views of other stakeholders in managing subjectivity. The common decisions made in Virgin Atlantic are programmed decisions, non-programmed decisions, strategic decisions, tactical decisions and operational decisions among others.  Ethics in Virgin Atlantic has been emphasized in the decision making processes.

Questions for the Warning on Frontline

Questions for the Warning on Frontline

Question one

Brooksley Bourne is a competent and proficient character and would be a vital asset for the government. Bourne was a powerful force in the government and she headed the Commodity Futures Trading Commission from 1996 to 1999. The organization is a government agency involved in managing and supervising commodity options market and controlling future trends in the market (Namboodiripad, 2010). Bourne played a significant role in trying to prevent the 2008 financial crisis. In her position, she was able to foresee a collapse of markets and financial crisis resulting from the uncontrolled derivatives market. Moreover, she proposed and pushed for reforms and controls that would have prevented the 2008 financial crisis.

Question Two

The lobbyists and corporations, which included the banks involved in the derivatives market, played a significant role in facilitating the 2008 crisis. The multi-million derivatives market was controlled by the monopolistic shareholders (Namboodiripad, 2010). These parties included 5 major banking institutions and their associate companies.  Moreover, government officials such as Rubin, Summers and Greenspan pushed for legislation to limit and prohibit Bourne from convincing the Congress to issue control on the derivatives market.  The market was thus left to run freely without any legislative control, despite its instability and uncontrolled expansion.

Question Three

The documentary is incredibly insightful and reveals concealed information on factors that affect the economy (Namboodiripad, 2010). Moreover, the documentary reveals the weaknesses and mismanagement in the government and negative politics propagated by government officials. The information obtained is vital in preventing future financial crisis and a collapse of the market. In addition, an individual identifies the hidden egocentric actions and how they can be curtailed to protect the well being of the people.

Characteristics of Abusers

Characteristics of Abusers

Domestic violence is referred to as dating abuse, domestic abuse, family violence, intimate partner violence (IPV), spousal abuse and battering. This is a pattern involving abuse of one partner by the other partner. The two partners must be in involved in intimate relationship in dating, family context, cohabitation or in marriage (Gosselin, 2010). It has been noted that domestic violence varies with culture and takes a number of forms. Some of the common forms of domestic violence are assault, physical aggression, threats, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, intimidation, domineering, controlling, economic deprivation and stalking among others (Collins & Spencer, 2002).

Abusers display a number of characteristics, some of the common characteristics are constantly keeping track of what the other spouse is doing, picking up quarrels on little things, accusing the other partner of being largely unfaithful, discouraging or preventing the partners from connecting with family or friends or school or work, furious while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, financial deprivation on the other partner, humiliation of the other partner even amidst other people, destroying things or property highly valued by the other partner, threats of hurting partners, actual battery of spouses, threats of engaging weapons in the violence, forced sex and blame games (Fazzone, 2007).

Warning signs that are associated with potential abusers identify with constant unclenching and clenching of fists, yelling or shouting, abuser constantly pacing on the floor and glaring facial expression. It is worth taking control of situations while dealing with abusive partners. It is worth avoiding private meetings with abusive persons, and in return prefers engaging counselors in managing the complex situations.

It has been noted that abusers involved in domestic violence in most cases blow up with small provocations, display signs of excessive jealousy, isolates themselves, feels insecure, have defaced self image, shows blame games, often are drug abusers, connected with history of family violence, cruel to children and animals, engage weapons, thinks that violence solves conflicts, engages physical strength as a way of solving arguments, verbal diarrhea, hold to stereotypes, controls the other partners, quick in getting involved in extra marital affairs, display expectations that are unrealistic, arrogant while making love and are unpredictable or moody (Gosselin, 2010).

Abused men as compared to the abused women rarely open up to the authorities. Men in most cases experience emotional and verbal abuse, a fact that is less admitted or accepted basing on diverse cultures. In most societies of the world, people think that women are the culprits of domestic violence, and that men are the abusers. The trend is changing with modernization where men are increasingly reporting domestic violence. In most cases, if women decide to be violent, then men are subjected to serious injuries (Collins & Spencer, 2002). The authorities in the earlier times did not recognize men reporting spousal abuse, but the concept is changing with time as more and more men are reporting spousal abuse. Men in most cases find it complex and difficult discussing issues of abuse in families, and in most cases will rarely admit being abused, there are high tendencies that the society feels that the man is not in control of his family. Women admit fast on issues relating to spousal abuse.

The facts of domestic violence indicated that few men are ashamed on reporting cases of being abused by women. Professionals in law enforcers and health care in most cases foster alternative explanations to signs, injury or bruises caused by domestic violence (Fazzone, 2007). Most judicial systems in the world highly support women in domestic abuse, and tend to disbelief men. Men in most cases tolerate pains inflicted by their spouses than women do. Women in most cases do not have the physical strengths of causing injury to men hence resort to weapons.

Abused men and women in most cases show low self esteem, in ways that they have a strong believe the abuse could be controlled or managed. Abused persons in most cases oriented their strength on hope that one day it shall come to a stop and that things will get better (Gosselin, 2010). Most women tend to cling to such relationships for the sake of children, especially if the children are young. A number of women call it quit after the children are grown up and easy to manage.

Domestic violence is related to substance abuse. Substance abuse identifies with use of drugs which are harmful to the addicts. In most cases, drug abuse has been related to alcohol abuse but the concept goes beyond alcohol to: barbiturates, substituted amphetamines, benzodiazepines, methaqualone, cocaine and opioids among others. Use of substance abuse leads to criminal penalties, social harm, physical harm and psychological harm. It has been proved that substance abuse leads to behaviors considered antisocial. Drug abuse is part of risk factors as pertaining to the offenders in the domestic violence. It has been proved that violence in most relationships happen after the intimate partners are involved in substance abuse (Fazzone, 2007).

Domestic violence and substance use results to offending relationships since one partner is at high risk of being victimized by the other party. Substance abuse has been related to after effects related to victimization of spouses in domestic violence. Substance abuse inhibits partners from protecting themselves and that substance abuse disorients the minds of the drug addicts in ways that they act in an antisocial way.

Domestic violence has been related with intentional psychological, emotional, physical force and sexual harm inflicted to other persons. Drug use has facilitated domestic violence since the violator’s acts in absence of normal reasoning. Research has shown that women who engage in drug abuse have high likelihoods of getting abused by their spouses. It was noted that men who practice drug abuse have high chances of abusing their partners; more than fifty percent of people involved in domestic violence have a problem with addiction. Substance abuse extends domestic violence from the parents to the children, most of the murder cases happened while one or both partners were under the influence of substance abuse. Teachers have cited a need of intervention for children whose parents engage substance abuse, since the negative influence is extended to the educational institutions. Women involved in recovery programs in most cased tend to result in violent trauma, which may lead to posttraumatic stress disorder (Collins & Spencer, 2002).

Mitigating domestic violence can be done through a number of ways depending on the context. Some of the methods are telling trustworthy friends, making arrangements relating to safety such as establishing a safe place to retreat, quitting the relationship and changing contacts. Another option is contacting domestic violence shelter or hotline where the institution offers counseling, legal rights on both partners and temporal shelter. Another option is getting a witness to spousal abuse, it is critical taking notes or recording on time, dates and what occurred during the spousal abuse. Hotline numbers dealing with domestic violence identifies with 911 among others.

Media and Cultural Literacy

Media and Cultural Literacy

I believe that creativity and artistry tend to be sacrificed in the preparation of mass media products that are broadcasted to large populations. One of the reasons why this happens is the fact that popular culture tends to have a lot of commercial connotations which leads the productions to be made in such a manner that is easily consumed by different segments of the population. In the same way that commodities are produced enmasse, television and radio programming tends to follow a similar pattern whereby productions by different media houses mirror each other due to the fact that they are competing for a similar audience. This kills creativity because unique products that have taken more creativity get to be considered outside of the context of the mainstream. Mass media products generally revolve around consumerism and of late the emphasis of sexual relationships. An upcoming segment that is quickly becoming monotonous is reality television which seems to push the boundaries of shock and awe in its themes (Kraidy and Sender, 2010). As they strive to outdo each other in these, media outlets inadvertently narrow the scope of genres thus leaving out and discouraging creativity being applied across the board.

Artistic vision however still has the hope of surviving given the fact that there are a number of non-conventional outlets where audiences can access niche content. These include art galleries, theaters and also web-based platforms such as YouTube. The content of these is hardly regulated by any form of corporate machinery and this means that a wider array of presentations have the chance to be showcased for the benefit of the general public. These outlets are also more artistic thus making them fertile grounds for the growth of artistic elements in media.

Principles of Economics

Principles of Economics

In the New York Times article on E-Cigarette Industry, Waiting to Exhale, the author explains the economic factors affecting the future growth and expansion of NJOY Company. The company has introduced a new cigarette brand in the market which, will utilize an advanced eco-friendly technology.  The cigarette has a competitive advantage over the conventional cigarette brands because instead of nicotine smoke, the e-cigarette produces a vapor (Richtel, 2013). Moreover, consumers can comfortably smoke in the public, as well as, in buildings and other social facilities. The brand has previously attracted a number of consumers, and its sales revenue amounted to 1.7 billion dollars. This is relatively low, compared to the sales revenue of standard cigarettes, which is currently, at 40 billion dollars. However, the high sales revenue for standard cigarettes is an indicator of the potential market in the economy.

The article also addresses factors that would affect and influence the success of the brand in the market. Smoking in public is  a social vice. Therefore, this has affected sales and marketability of cigarettes in the past. However, with the new brand, problems associated with marketing and social smoking will be eliminated. The presentation of a safer cigarette product than conventional brands positively influences consumer preferences towards the e-brand (Richtel, 2013). In addition, the author asserts that the e-cigarette brand will also have a ready market because smokers are likely to change their brand. The e-cigarette brand will also be designed in such a manner that it will create familiarity for the consumer. However, the company faces challenges of competition from new entrants in the market providing similar products.

Elasticity is a measure of the effect changes in variables have on the subject product. Elasticity can take many forms including the price elasticity of demand, income elasticity of demand, price elasticity of supply, and elasticity of substitution (Taylor and Weerapana, 2012). An elastic variable changes with any change in other variables. For instance, an increase in price of a product would lead to a decrease in demand for the product. On the other hand, an inelastic variable varies less than proportionately to changes in other variables. The market for cigarettes is elastic in terms of substitutability. An introduction of e-cigarettes in the market will significantly affect the demand of conventional cigarette brands. On the other hand, substitutability of the two cigarette brands will considerably increase the demand for e-cigarettes.

Market structures involve the characteristics and nature of competition in the market for a given product. The number of firms producing a certain product significantly influences the market share of the companies involved. A market structure can take many forms including monopolistic competition, oligopoly, perfect competition and monopoly (Mankiw, 2011). The market for e-cigarette is an oligopoly market because a number of firms have a similar product. Moreover, there are new entrants in the market, but the market is not yet flooded. The nature of competition in the market is considerably favorable for the company. Moreover, the demand and consumer base for the product is high, and it is expected to increase over time. NJOY has an added advantage because it has already launched its brand and attained sales amounting to millions of dollars. I agree with the author’s point of view because the concept of e-cigarettes is attainable. The product has a ready market, which is expansive and can include international markets. Moreover, the product eliminates the health hazard concerns associated with ordinary cigarette brands.
