While responding to another request for information, Mary realizes that the medical record she is reviewing belongs to Ron, her best friend’s fiancé. Mary learns that Ron has a drug abuse problem and was recently diagnosed with HIV disease. Situational decision making addresses the ability to make decisions based on applicable information. We often see organizational rules “adjusted” based on people and conditions. An antonym can be seen as, “what’s good for the goose is good for the gander…” This may apply to broad issues such as “thou shall not kill” but may be inappropriate for certain conditions where killing (for example) is justified. Consider a zero tolerance rule compared to others where certain conditions may cause an administrator to act differently when fixing a problem. Consider elements where conflict may arise in this process.
