Time Management in Community Policing
Officer’s time is the most valuable police resource. The following methods can be used to help in solving problems while effectively handling calls:
False burglar alarms: Though properly functioning alarms are helpful in preventing burglary, over 90 percent of alarm activations are false. These false alarms consume police time as they respond to them. The police should shift the responsibility of verifying the validity of the alarm to the alarm company operating the system (Plant & Scott, n.d.).
911 hang-ups: Many such calls result from accidental misdialing, juvenile pranks and deliberate attempts to distract the police. The police should partner with emergency communication centers in identifying and remedying 911 hang-up patterns (Plant & Scott, n.d.).
Chronic and heavy users of police service: Some lonely individuals desiring company sometimes call police to report trivial or fictitious issues. Social service programs or access to non-emergency alternative phone calls like 211 or 311 can better meet such needs (Plant & Scott, n.d.).
Use of pressure: Police may use pressure on retailers with high-volume theft issues who often fail to implement basic preventive measures, as well as nightclubs and taverns who heavily rely on police on chronic trouble to reduce the need to call police. Heavy and chronic consumers of police services should be charged extra fees if they refuse to take steps to prevent problems (Plant & Scott, n.d.).
