Should regulations regarding use of cell phones while driving be standardized?

Sanctity of life is the most important aspect of humanity that all citizens of the United States should uphold and obey right to life laws by keeping transport regulations regarding use of cell phones while driving. In my opinion, the government through the United States Department of Transportation needs to standardize laws and regulations regarding cell phone usage while driving (Richtel, 2011).

This topic is of concern to me due to increasing development of electronic gadgets whose usage is causing distracted driving. On a major case, people are busy trying to update their facebook status, twitter handle, or even sending a text and few seconds or minutes spent doing that jeopardizes the lives of many people directly or indirectly (D!straction.Gov., 2012).

According to the official United States website for distracted driving, 41 states ban text messaging for all drivers while 12 states prohibit all drivers from using handheld phones while driving (Richtel, 2011). Depending on a state, regulations on cell phone use while driving are either primary or secondary.

I feel that the National Transportation Safety Board and Department of Transportation needs to address this matter more critically and sternly and standardize all laws in all the states to curb distracted driving, minimize rate of road accidents, and uphold the right to life law (D!straction.Gov., 2012).

Should taxes on alcohol and tobacco be increased to help pay for rising medical costs?

Drug and substance abuse is an increasing menace facing all citizens of the United States and negatively impacting on political, social, and economical sectors. According to a survey done by the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in 2012, approximately 52.1% of Americans aged 12years and above were current alcohol drinkers. This was an increase from 51.8% in 2011 from survey done then (Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, 2012).  Approximately 26.7% which is roughly 69.5 million Americans were tobacco products users (Fryar et al., 2009).

The increasing use of tobacco and alcohol in America is a worrisome issue that caught my attention. The fact that these two substances are increasingly being used by youths and child in high school and university is even more troubling. The young generations who are presumably the leaders of tomorrow are at high risk of using these substances among others which eventually ruin their lives (Fryar et al., 2009).

The government through the United States Department of Treasury collaborating with Department of Health and Human Services should increase taxes on tobacco and alcohol to help it cater for high health care expenditure. According to research, tobacco is imposing a terrible toll in health, lives and families, businesses and government dollars. Approximately $96billion is lost to health care expenditure and $97 billion in lost productivity due to tobacco use yearly (Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, 2012).  The constraint that tobacco and alcohol has on the social, political, and economic sectors of America should be addressed through increasing taxes to minimize these constraints.

Should unemployment regulations and benefits be changed?

Cases of unemployment are to some extent not the fault of individuals and government has a responsibility in ensuring its citizens are taken care of through special programs. United States government has a Federal-State Unemployment Insurance Program which ensures that temporary financial assistance is provided to unemployed people who meet state laws. There are also laws regarding equality in employment and employment of certain percentage of the minorities by companies (United States Department of Labor, 2013).

This topic interest since the government through the Civil Rights Act established affirmative action program which prohibited and corrected historical discrimination of minorities. The fact the government has been at the fore-front of enforcing equality and fairness is commendable (Office of Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, and Diversity, 2013).

United States Department of Labor should not change unemployment regulations and benefits since they benefit many families and minimize crime rates that would otherwise occur in their absence. They also promote diversity in the workplace which positively impacts the social and economic sectors of America.
