International management unit:

DESCRIPTOR

The aim of this unit of study is to develop an understanding of the critical factors impacting upon

management in an international context. It explores the role of management in any nationality,

encouraging a truly global perspective in dealing with dynamic management issues in foreign and

local environments. Culture is considered from a management perspective and also evaluated in

global context. Various theories, models and frameworks will be introduced that provide different

perspectives on understanding and managing internationally.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this unit of study, students should be able to:

  1. An understanding of what comprises the domain of international management and the global

environment;

  1. An insight into the role of culture in the global market place;
  2. An understanding of managing strategy and human resources in the international context;
  3. Relate this knowledge to contemporary practice in international management.

UNIT CONTENT

The aim of the subject is to develop an understanding of the critical factors impacting upon the

management of resources in the international business environment. The focus is on:

  • Cross cultural management and how far culture influences behaviour in the workplace and

the internal systems of the company with a focus on social responsibility and ethical

behaviour.

  • Global and strategic issues in international business and the influence of non-cultural factors

on decision-making and implementation.

  • The implications that the mix of cultural and non-cultural strategies have on international

human resource management which includes expatriation and developing international staff.

 

Assessment 1 – Case Study (REPORT)

Weight:  (Written report = 20%)

Written Report: 2000 words report.

 

Aim:

In groups of three to four students, prepare a report (from the recommended textbook) to other members of the tutorial group and to highlight the insights and issues pertinent to the particular topic area within international management.

 

Objective:

The objective is to highlight the key issues in relation to a case organisation your group has chosen.

 

Instructions:

Each team will need to select a case study [a Comprehensive Case study in Deresky H (2011),

International Management: Managing Across Borders and Cultures, Text & Cases, 7

ed., Pearson,

NJ] from the list below and prepare a case report on the issues identified within the chosen case

study supported by a review of the academic literature on the relevant topic area from where the case

study is placed within the textbook. Depending on the number of students in semester 2 class, the

number of case might be less and case presentations will be limited to cover cases 1-9.

Report

Your report will broadly follow a case analysis report format and include the following structure:

  1. Executive Summary (200 words)
  2. Introduction and case overview (500 words)ßThis is done already .will be attached in a word doc.
  3. Case Analysis and (1000 words)*
  4. Conclusion (300 words)

 

*The case analysis section requires a critical discussion of the case study including additional critical

discussion of the topic through use of recent scholarly research. More details will be communicated in

the tutorial/workshop.

 

Criteria for Grading Group Report:

  • Follows a correct report writing structure
  • Includes an Executive Summary (an accurate one page summary of the main points addressed within the report)
  • Body (Covers all the required areas, is well planned and written, demonstrates a sound grasp of the background knowledge,

demonstrated the ability to collect and articulate information in accordance with relevant theoretical concepts).

  • Conclusion
  • Shows critical thinking and analytical ability.
  • Substantiates all arguments or findings presented.
  • Is adequately documented where appropriate.
  • Presentation (Well written, presented professionally, grammar, expression and sentence structure).
  • References (Range, quality and number of references)

Complies with the Harvard System of notation or citation(e.g. use of surname and year in paragraph)

Uses paraphrasing and avoids direct quotes
