There are three schools of studying the psychology of culture. Students will be assigned the role of a cross-cultural (Berry, Triandis)These scholars’ positions are articulated in a special issue of the Asian Journal of Social Psychology (2000). The debate will be facilitated/monitored by the course coordinator. Students should also submit a one-page summary of their position. This exercise is designed to familiarize students with the history, development and current significance of schools of culture and psychology and to enhance oral presentation skills. Assessment criteria: During the debate I will be noting both the quality and quantity of your contributions. First, I will be looking for evidence that you are accurately expressing the views of the scholar whom you represent. You will also be evaluated on whether your contributions to the debate show evidence that you understand your “opponents” and can comment critically on their positions. The one-page summary will be assessed primarily in terms of 1) accuracy and 2) capacity to identify the most important features of the scholar’s position. Clarity of writing will also form part of the assessment criteria. 7 articles are provided. “Cultural 1” and “Cultural 2” represent the views of Cultural Psychology; “Cross-Cultural 1” and “Cross-Cultural 2” represent the views of Cross-Cultural Psychology; “Indigenous 1” and “Indigenous 2” represent the views of Indigenous Psychology. Finally, “Psychology of Culture” will help you understand general differences and similarities between these views. My assigned role is Berry who represents Cross-Cultural Psychology. Please write a 4 pages debate and 1 page of summary of my debate. There is no specific format for the debate part as it will be orally presented, but please write that one-page summary in APA style in accordance with the description mentioned above (cover page and references page not needed).
