What is your favorite dish? The term paper requires you to research all the aspects of your favorite dish. Which is the country of origin? Was it farmed or reared, and where from? What are the components of this dish? How do you cook it? How do you eat it? What changes in the physical structures that marry the flavors? How does the chemistry affect taste? How many calories? Students will be required to watch either Food, Inc. or Super Size Me. Food, Inc. by Robert Keener examines the agricultural and economic impacts of the American food industry, and ultimately how select organizations have greatly shaped our consumer habits. Super Size Me is an experimental documentary by Morgan Spurlock that tackles the fast food industry and how these bodies have likely misled the public about the actually nutritional content and value of their products. After watching either film, you are to write a reaction to the film, and discuss the integral aspects of the film in terms of what you have learned thus far in the term.

In Meditations IV, Descartes claims that the “greatest and chief perfection of man” consists in the avoidance of error. In part six of his Discourse on Method, he presents a picture in which the advance of knowledge will render human beings “the masters and possessors of nature.” Dostoevsky presents a picture in which our drive for freedom is more fundamental than our drive for knowledge. His narrator claims: “Reason is a fine thing, there’s no question about it, but reason is only reason and only satisfies man’s rational faculties, whereas desire is a manifestation of the whole of life, that is of the wholw of human life, along with reason and all of our head scratching”

Allan Poe stories covered (The Gold-Bug, The Spectacles, The Oblong Box, Thou Art the Man, The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether). This essay must make a formal claim on the structure of the text and be backed up with evidence from the texts themselves or from secondary sources (not required). Specifically the way Poe makes use of the narrator (unnamed, naive, etc.) and the way it creates suspense for the reader as well as helping develop a mystery in the story(ies).
