Write an argument analysis essay in which you analyze the two letters by the clergymen and King that are attached.  Put the letters in historical context by describing the rhetorical situation, with particular emphasis on the exigence, the audiences, and the constraints.  Explain the issue from both points of view.  Summarize the positions taken on the issue in both letters.  State the claims in both letters.  Describe and evaluate the support, warrants, and backing in both.  Identify any fallacies and describe how the authors use rebuttal.  Finally, evaluate the ethical or unethical qualities that appear in these letters and write a conclusion in which you make a claim about the relative effectiveness of the two letters.  Which letter is more effective?  Why?  Have your own views been modified or changed?  How?

Recall the two presidential speeches that were given by both President Obama and President Regan, respectively.  Note that these two presidents used the Rogerian method of argumentation to not only win over those who agreed with their viewpoints, but also to win over those who held different views.

Think about a national or international issue that matters to you and write your own speech for that issue, using the Rogerian style of argumentation.  How would you win over the other side?  You don’t need to use citations, but please do not create statistics or ‘facts.’

A comparison and contrast essay combines analysis of two individual items with synthesis, in which your analysis of those items will create a larger thesis statement.  Often when comparing two related things we can learn much more than just analyzing one thing by itself.

For this assignment you will be comparing an older film and a newer remake in the U.S.  The focus should not be on the obvious technical differences.  Instead what are the differences in plot, setting, character, casting, etc?  What do those differences suggest to you about how cultural values have changed?  For example in the 1960 film Ocean’s 11 the main characters do not get away with money stolen from a casino, but in the 2000 remake they do.  What might that suggest about how we view the idea of crime and punishment in the U.S. today?
