Discrimination and Prejudice

Part I.  Personal Connection

Describe your reactions, perceptions and significant insights gained from the reading and activities, being specific to demonstrate your engagement of ALL the readings.  So that means incorporate insights from all the material. That said, as you know, I’m not looking for a simple “report” on each reading…weave it together as you make connections and applications between the readings and to your life/society.  As you do, focus on these lines of thought:

Ÿ      What key things did you learn about prejudice and discrimination (for you? In general?)

Ÿ      What, if anything did you really identify with in the readings, the other activities?  Are you aware of times in your life where you (or someone you know/love) have maybe benefited from some angle of “privilege.”  Or, on the flip side, are you aware of a time where you personally experienced some unfavorable bias “against” you. (It may not have been intentional, but unfavorable bias is the flip side of “unearned privilege.”

Part II. Organization Application

How does discrimination or prejudice show itself (subtly or not) in an organization, group, or team with which you are or have been affiliated?  Again, this could be a past or present organization in your life. And, remember, prejudice and discrimination it doesn’t have to be ill-intended or malicious…sometimes these things are not at all intentional or evil but still impact people and/or situations inside or outside the organization. Describe enough of a situation concretely to provide context and use concepts from the readings in your response.

If you don’t think there is any bias happening in ANY organization you are (or ever have been) in, then think about your friends and family’s experience as a source of potential connection. Think again more carefully and perhaps revisit the readings to clarify the various forms or the ways we might do things (like slide 23 in audio/visual lesson 7…or think through the chapter 6 material more (that’s the Thomas chapter on Group Dynamics) and remember the power of self-fulfilling prophecy and fundamental attribution error, etc.  These things happen so often we hardly “see” them anymore unless we pay attention to notice.

Economics for Management

In the tutorial classes we constructed, using Excel, a simple linear regression model of the demand for beef. The model was of the form:

Where QB was defined as the quantity (volume, 2001=100) of beef (all beef); PB was defined as the average price ($/lb) of beef (all beef) and Y was defined as disposable personal income.

Using the Livestock Marketing Information Centre and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis websites collect data for January 2004 to December 2007 so that you can estimate the regression model

Where:

QC          is the quantity (volume, 2001=100) of chicken (all chicken)

PC           is the average price of chicken (all chicken) ($/lb)

  1. Explain the difference between arc and point elasticity of demand. Why do economists calculate elasticity?

  1. Assume that the price of chicken is $1.50/lb currently.  Using your regression model calculate the arc and point elasticity of demand if the price of chicken rises by 20%

  1. Using your estimated regression model obtain the equations for total and marginal revenue.  Assuming that the total cost of producing chicken is $0.48 per pound (lb) produced, calculate the quantity and price a monopolist would set to maximise profit.

Using the Livestock Marketing Information Centre and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis websites collect data for January 2004 to December 2007 so that you can estimate the regression model

Where:

QC          the quantity (volume, 2001=100) of chicken (all chicken)

PC           is the average price of chicken (all chicken) ($/lb)

PT           is the average price of turkey (all turkey) ($/lb)

PP           is the average price of pork (all pork) ($/lb)

Y              is disposable personal income

  1. Using your estimated regression model calculate the cross price elasticity of demand with respect to the price of turkey and the price of pork.  Based on your findings can you identify whether turkey and pork are substitute or complementary goods?

  1. Using your estimated regression model calculate the income elasticity of demand.  Based on your findings can you determine whether chicken is a normal, superior or inferior good?

  1. Briefly explain the statistical difficulties that economist face in attempting to estimate demand functions using regression analysis?

Business Process Integration with SAP

  1. critically appraise the implications of the way in which Enterprise-Wide Systems affect people, processes, structures and operational management, and be able to identify and define potential problems and solutions.
  2.  identify and explain the major objectives, critical success factors and characteristics of Enterprise-Wide Systems and their implementation

GIS

Question 1 [4 marks] [Maximum of 200 words]

Explain the term ‘Metadata’ as related to a GIS. Discuss why this is becoming

an important part of most GIS and what problems you are likely to face if you

had to work on a GIS developed by someone else but there was no metadata

attached to it.

Question 2 [4 marks] [Maximum of 300 words]

“Whether a feature is represented as a point or a polygon in a GIS data base is

entirely dependent on the nature of the phenomena itself.”

Do you agree with this statement? Explain

Question 3 [6 marks] [Maximum of 400 words]

Review the issues involved in selecting a resolution for a raster GIS project.

What resolutions would be appropriate for the following problems: (a)

determining logging areas in a National Forest, (b) finding suitable locations for

backcountry campsites, (c) planning a national highway from Melbourne to

Darwin?

Question 4 [6 marks] [Maximum of 600 words]

Write an essay discussing the raster and vector data models. In your

discussion include issues such as: the strengths and weaknesses of the two

models, the costs of setting up the two data models, common sources of data

for the 2 models, different scenarios in which one model would be preferred

over the other, and why most spatial datasets have data in both formats. Give

examples where possible. EM334/534 Introduction to GIS 2

Question 5 [Approximately 2000 words]

Write a detailed essay on “Datums and Map Projections”. In your discussion,

include issues such as:

 The importance of datums and map projections

 Some common map projections in current use

 The map projections used in Australia

 A time line of map projection changes in Australia

 Why all data layers within a GIS analysis need to be in the same map

projection.

"Bitter experience in war has taught the maxim that the art of war is the art of the logistically feasible."

– ADM Hyman Rickover, USN

"The line between disorder and order lies in logistics"

– Sun Tzu

These two quotes emphasize the centrality of logistics and supply in determining the outcome of battles and wars. The Vietnam War offers numerous examples of these maxims in action. For this research blog you will create an entry that focuses on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Based on the attached reading and the segments of the PBS videos that describe the Trail, give an overview of the history, purpose, and impact of the Ho Chin Minh Trail on the Vietnam War, and of US efforts to disrupt it. Was the Ho Chi Minh Trail significant a factor in determining the outcome of the Vietnam War, or was it a minor factor? Explain your reasoning.

In addition to the Prados article and the footage of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in the PBS videos, here are links to two links to videos. The first describes the experiences of two Americans involved in trying to blockade the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The second, which relates to the larger question of logistics rather than the Trail, gives you a tour of one of the most famous tunnel complexes near Saigon that supported the war effort against the US and South Vietnam. Feel free to incorporate insights from these videos into your blog.*** USE ONLY THE INFORMATION I PROVIDE AND INSTRUSTION I GIVE YOU ONLY PLS***. sugestion reading “”The Vietnam War: A graphic history by Dwight Jon Zimmerman”. BHS420 QUantative Reasoning (Correlational Methods) SLP# 5

1. Write an introductory paragraph and state which topic you have been researching for the SLP.

2. Write 1 paragraph about each article. You should be able to use your previous papers to gather much of this information. Include the following:

  • the title of the article
  • who did the research
  • the research procedure or design
  • where and how the sample was obtained
  • what procedures the research entailed
  • a description of the results
  • any confounding factors

2. Discuss which of your research studies seems to yield the most meaningful and valid results, and which seems to be the weakest or most questionable. Be sure to explain why think so, using the information you have learned in this course.

3. In another paragraph, remind me of your SLP research question and your hypothesis. Knowing what you’ve learned about correlations and confounding variables:

(a) identify 1 correlation you would look for in your research.

(b) Identify 2 possible confounding variables that would affect the research topic you have been focusing on throughout the SLP.

4. Close the paper with a concluding paragraph that summarizes what you have learned from the SLP assignments throughout the session.
