Case Study: George

George is 71 years old. His wife of nearly 50 years passed away 4 months ago. He has come to his first counseling session at the insistence of his son, Michael, who reports that George has lost interest in good food, once a passion of his; that he seldom leaves his house; and that he appears depressed and without enthusiasm even for visits from his beloved grandchildren.

George is sullen, quiet, and almost non-communicative at first meeting. He appears unkempt and reports feelings of abandonment and detachment. While he has no prior history of depression, his father committed suicide when George was young.

Explain how you would work with George by addressing the following areas:

1. Explore the ethical issues associated with working with George. What are your ethical concerns as you begin working with George? What ethical responsibilities might you need to consider in constructing an assessment plan for George? Explain the unique ethical considerations we face when working with George, as well as when working with elder client populations.

2. Identify your initial counseling goals for George. What would your initial treatment goals be for George? What might your initial theoretical approach and treatment plan for working with George be? Support your choice. What areas of assessment will you initially focus upon? Why?

3. What is your perspective on incorporating George’s input into his treatment planning and goal setting? How might you entice him to become actively involved in such a process?

4. How would you plan to take advantage of George’s support systems? What do you consider his greatest assets for improvement? His greatest challenges? How might you plan to use both his advantages and disadvantages in constructing a treatment plan for George?

Explaining U.S. foreign policy in two “cases.”

Choose two cases of U.S. foreign policy decisions or behavior and use one conceptual approach (hypothesis) to examine the outcome across cases. You must develop a causal explanation based on the hypothesis. You are free to develop your own causal argument or conceptual approach.

Some suggested approaches are:
Presidents are meaningfully constrained by public opinion in foreign policy decisions. In reality, Congress has been unable to check or balance Presidential foreign policy decisions since 1965.
Special interests such as economic actors or ethnic influence groups can dominate U.S. foreign policy on issues important to them.
The conduct of foreign affairs is dominated by the interests of various parts of the foreign policy bureaucracy and the secretaries / directors leading them.
Republican and Democratic presidents have substantially different approaches to foreign policy due to their different political ideologies.
The U.S. news media are important independent actors in the process of foreign policy agenda setting.
Some suggested pairs of cases are:

U.S. relations with Indonesia under Suharto and underYudhoyono;

U.S. use of force in the Bosnian and Kosovo conflicts;

U.S. relations with Canada and Australia;

U.S. free trade diplomacy with Australia and Singapore;

U.S. policy towards Africa under Clinton and G.W. Bush…

i) introduction of the conceptual approach (hypothesis) you are studying;
ii) introduction of the cases chosen, suggesting why they are chosen;
iii) detailed examination of the cases based on the conceptual approach (hypothesis);
iv) discussion and synthesis of the results of the analysis for both cases;
v) conclusion.
It is advisable to choose cases (that is, specific decisions or events in U.S. foreign relations) which and have clear relevance to the concept you choose. It is not necessary to include all aspects or details of a given case and/or of a given approach or hypothesis in your paper. Rather, you should focus on providing a “structured, focused comparison”1 of the two cases to examine one clear-cut
proposition.
Conclusion: State whether the conceptual approach (hypothesis) is supported, undermined, or whether the evidence is indeterminate. There are three possible conclusions, each equally acceptable. Your analysis can show that the hypothesis appears incorrect, that it appears correct, or
that the evidence is inconclusive. The paper will be judged on the quality of the evidence and arguments, not on how strongly you support the hypothesis.

Banc One Corporation: Asset and Liability Management

1. What is the problem for the Banc One?
2. How does Banc One manage its interest rate exposure and what role do derivatives play in its interest-rate risk management?
3. What are AIRS? Why is Banc One using them to manage its risk?
4. How did Banc One control the other risks associated with its derivatives portfolio?
5. What should the executives of Banc One do? Why?

3. Take a look at a violent scene from a film of your choice (suggestions: Saving Private Ryan’s opening 20 minutes, The Godfather, etc.). Discuss whether or not you believe the violence contributes to the film in an essential way. Is it necessary? Would the film have the same impact without it? Why or why not?

4. Do we need to regulate somehow the role of money in the American political process? Why or why not? (More on this in our section on Media Law)

5. Describe three (3) ways in which you believe your consumption of media has influenced who you are, what you believe or how you act? Be specific without embarrassing yourself.

Taxation Law case studies

Case Study
Basil arrived in Australia on 28 August 2013 from his usual domicile in England. He obtained a working visa that permits him to work in Australia for three years. He is a specialist in information technology and is employed by Systems Ltd, a resident UK company that has secured a contract in Australia. His wife Sybil and two school aged children accompany him. For the present he proposes to rent accommodation in Brisbane but he may buy a property if he likes the country and spots a real estate bargain.

Basil is paid a base salary of $12,000 per month plus a rent subsidy of $600 per month. Half of the net (after tax) salary is credited to a Brisbane bank account, the balance to an account at the Bank of England. He is also provided with a fully maintained motor vehicle for his private use. His employer pays half his phone account. The amounts are $A125, $A460, $A440 and $A475 in September, December, March and June, respectively.

His England home, owned jointly with his wife Sybil, is rented out for $A800/month, in advance on the 1st of every month, and paid into the England bank account. Each quarter, interest is credited to the bank account in the joint names of Basil and Sybil.

Although Basil has an office at his place of work he has also set up a study in the spare room of his rental accommodation. He often uses the study on weekends and sometimes during the week in the evening for work related matters.

In December 2013 Basil received a performance award from his employer consisting of a fully paid trip for the family to Hong Kong. The trip is valued at $A10,000, is non-transferable and must be taken before August 2014. It has not been taken by June 30, 2014.

In October 1990 Basil acquired a parcel of speculative shares in an English company for $A14, 000. The price had not changed for some time and then in March 2014 suddenly jumped to $A23, 000 and Basil sold the shares immediately. In November 2013 he purchased Australian shares for $8,250 and sold them in April 2014 for $6,400.

At an auction in Brisbane in December 2013 he purchased four dining chairs that Sybil liked. The total price was $550. Later, a friend visiting their house saw the chairs and was sure they were Queen Anne antiques. He contacted a collector who inspected the chairs and offered Basil $14,000 for the set.

Required:
1. Is Basil a resident of Australia for tax purposes? [You should consider leading case authorities and rulings in your answer. Suggested maximum words: 500 words for this part.]

2. Assume Basil is an Australian resident. Advise him of his tax position and the assessability of the following. [Make sure you consider relevant cases, legislation and rulings in your answer: Suggested word allocation approximately 1000 words]

i) Salary and rent subsidy
ii) Motor vehicle, phone account and holiday
iii) English rent
iv) English shares and Australian shares
v) Chairs.
3. Advise Basil whether he is entitled to a deduction on any of his home office expenses. Note: consider both occupancy expenses (i.e. rental, rates and insurance) and running expenses (i.e. heating, cooling, lighting and depreciation) associated with the study. [You should consider leading case authorities and rulings in your answer. Suggested maximum words: 500 words]

Case Study Two (40 marks) (suggested word limit for this case study: 1000 words approximately)
Family Value Stores [FVS] is a large department store in a Brisbane. Sales are made on the following terms:
Cash;
Lay-by;
By what is called “take-now; pay-later”.

Required 1
Under the Lay-by sales conditions customers pay a non-refundable deposit of 10% and agree to pay off the balance within 12 months. The goods are taken from the store’s inventory and set aside at the time the deposit is made.

i) Should FVS return on a cash or accrual basis? Cite relevant case law.
ii) When is income derived in a lay-by sale?
iii) What is the tax treatment of a) the deposit; and b) progress payments?
iv) What is the tax treatment of the trading stock the subject of a lay-by?

Required 2

Under the ‘take now, pay later’ contract customers pay a 10% deposit and may take the goods on condition that a further 8% of the sale price is added to the balance owing which the customer then pays off in 12 equal monthly instalments. [See example] The contract notes that title passes to the customer at the time of sale and, if the customer defaults on any payment, the whole debt is immediately payable and recoverable.

Example: List price $3000; deposit $300; balance $3000 + (3000 x 8%) 240 – 300 = $2940/12 = $245 per month. [Total paid: $3,240]

For the year ended June 30 records show sales of $1,125,000:
Deposits received $112,500
8% interest charged 90,000
Progress payments received 700,000
Balance owing 515,000
(Cost of goods subject to contracts $690,000)

Advise FVS what income is derived and when and what tax consequences follow on default? (9 marks)

DECISION-MAKING & PROBLEM-SOLVING

Each student will identify a company and conduct a research project on the company’s management problem.

Some suggested companies are:  Telstra, Qantas, Fosters.  You may however choose any company from any country.

A business can be thought of as a stream of decisions:

What product should we make

What price should we charge

How should we get the product to market

How should we communicate with potential customers about the product

What regions should we operate in

What partners should we have

What market segments exist and which ones should we target

Who should we employ

How much training should we deliver

Who should we promote

What IT supplier should we use

What advertising agency should we use

Where should the office be located

And many more.

Sourcing both secondary and primary data, analysing and then drawing realistic conclusions, it will be presented in a report format and then the key issues and findings are to be presented.

Analysis of practice and learning

This Assignment focuses on the pursuit of professional development and the application of evidence based interventions to address particular practice areas.

Major Depression

Evidence for Narrative Therapy

• Engage with the literature (social work, psychology, etc) and determine what approach has the best evidence for addressing this particular problem ( Here you need to select one or more theories or approaches or intervention techniques)

• Summarize the evidence from peer-reviewed literature ( why you used the particular approach what are the evidences)

• Provide a critical analyses of the approach (limitations, applicability to social work, and appropriateness for culturally diverse populations)

Organisational Theory

Quandong Community Health Service (QCHS) provides a comprehensive range of services in the regional area in which it is located. Clients/consumers who require counselling services might be referred by health care practitioners or might self-refer to the Service. QCHS currently operates on a service model that includes clients coming to an initial counselling appointment where the rostered intake counselling practitioner assesses the client’s needs and may make a referral to either the general counselling service or specialist counselling teams within QCHS. Currently there is a 3 months wait for clients to come for the intake assessment appointment. This waiting time has been steadily increasing over the last 12 months. Clients then have a further wait of 4 to 9 months until they are able to have their arranged counselling appointment – although clients with urgent problems are seen by Service staff as a priority. Financial resources are finite and while QCHS will receive workforce cost CPI (consumer price increase) increases each year, increases in staffing positions are not anticipated for QCHS. QCHS needs to make some strategic decisions about client access, models of care delivery and its operations.

Discuss the importance of organisational theory (OT) on decisions that Quandong Community Health Service will make about its counselling services in relation to the frameworks that underpin those decisions.
