ASSIGNMENT 1: A Critical Reflective Essay of Leadership theory and practice via an account of BP’s Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

Worth: 35%

Length: 2000 Words Maximum

Due Date: Day 3

Upon reading the Financial Times article of July 15, 2010 on BP’s oil spill (available on UTS online) please address the following:

  1. (500 words/6 marks) Briefly describe the kinds of moral accountability issues inherent (explicit or implied) in the article, specifically from several perspectives (choose 2 from the following):
    1. A BP rig operator (on a platform other than that which exploded).
    2. A 25-year-old postgraduate university student from a township on the Gulf of Mexico – choice of their academic study is yours.
    3. A UK based retiree with a major income stream from BP shares.

In other words, what do you imagine might be major concerns for these individuals – in terms of impacts on them and beyond? While acknowledging financial implications please do not confine yourself to this one dimension – you need to imagine wider perspectives.

  1. Based on the above
    1. (300 words/4 marks) Briefly describe and explain what YOU consider to be 2-3 major leadership issues of vital importance for BP’s future? These issues may be ideas about some tensions you perceive between conflicting interests between stakeholders – matters not readily resolved. Alternatively they may be tensions/concerns you see between BP’s espoused policies and the events before and or surrounding the Gulf oil spill.

THEN

  1. (1200 words/25 marks) Drawing on YOUR critical assessment of leadership theories to date make an argument for how to change the practice of senior BP managers in responding to public critiques of their actions in the Gulf spill. In doing this, you need to assume the role of a coach to senior BP managers.

NOTE: Of central concern in #2 here are matters NOT of public relations (P.R.) and “spin” but of moral accountability to multiple stakeholders – ie your view of what BP’s senior management NEED to do to demonstrate they (as individuals) understand the links between leadership and moral accountability to those stakeholders. Thus what is needed specifically in part 2(b) of the essay is a structured argument – shaped as YOUR coaching approach to change the practice of BP’s most senior leaders. You need to consider the difficulties/issues that might stop/prevent organisations, such as BP, from engaging into responsible practices, and suggest how these might be overcome. Please note: there is not a quick-fix solution available for such problems so develop your argument appropriately. Do not suggest naïve, unrealistic quick-fixes.

In so doing you will also be illustrating YOUR deepening personal and critical awareness of the theoretical and practical limitations/possibilities in the leadership / coaching / mentoring literature you’ve addressed to this stage. Half the marks of part 2 (b) – ie 12.50% will be focused on how well you demonstrate a critical awareness of the literature (for example your reading of tensions, contradictions, gaps, bias in what you’ve read). Merely describing the literature (“Smith says, Jones says” etc) will result in major loss of marks.

Use the Harvard method of referencing (more details are at the end of this outline).

  1. Use double spacing
  2. Ensure page numbers are used
  3. Use 12 point font (Times or Arial)
  4. Use headings but no more than three levels of heading.

Typically, an essay will only have four levels of headings. Level 1 heading refers to the main header (e.g. Introduction). Level two headings deal with sub topics within the discussion – for example if you look at this briefing document it has one Level 1 heading (i.e. Title), then a few Level 2 headings (i.e. background task, format etc), and the odd Level 3 heading (i.e., Harvard Method)

  1. Page set up – use 1 inch margins for top and bottom, and 1.25 inches for left and right margins (this is the standard margin format in Word).

MARKING CRITERIA

The essay will be marked according to the following criteria: structure & content (these are not in order of importance) – but I do include the weighting. All submitted assignments start with a score of 100% and lose marks for weaknesses and problems in these key areas. I include a final column of what not to do

Final Project

The Final Project in this course will be a literature review aimed at determining the evidence to support a counseling theory, technique, or intervention of your choice. In this project, you will explore quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research articles published within the last 10 years in counseling journals related to your selected topic. In addition to examining specific research methodology, you will also include a review of articles focused on program evaluation efforts related to your topic of interest.

LITERATURE REVIEW

The Final Project for this course will involve the construction of a literature review that can be used to inform counseling practice. For this assignment, you will have to do the following:

a) Select a theory, technique, or intervention strategy that can be applied in your counseling specialty that you would like to explore in the professional literature
b) Visit the Walden University Library to determine if there is sufficient professional literature available related to your topic of interest
c) Submit your topic to your Course Instructor for approval
d) Select:

1. At least five quantitative research articles
2. At least five qualitative research articles
3. At least one mixed methods research article
4. At least one program evaluation article for review

Your review should include between 12 and 15 peer-reviewed articles. Note that mixed methods research articles may not be published on every topic of interest. In these cases, additional program evaluation articles may be substituted.

Constructing a Literature Review

Writing a quality literature review involves a thorough knowledge of research methods and exemplary writing skills. A well-written literature review conveys the story of the research that has been conducted to date on a certain topic. Contained in the story is a critical analysis of the research efforts (e.g., design, procedure, sample, data analysis, and interpretation) and an evaluation of how the research can inform practice. By conducting a review of the literature, it is possible to determine if gaps exist that require further research. Throughout this course, you will develop a thorough understanding of the literature review process and the components of a quality literature review.

US GAAP and IFRS

Is sustainability reporting by companies merely an attempt to greenwash their business conduct?
