Technology tools

Technology tools can be used to study many geometric ideas. Reflect on the types of observations, comparisons, and conjectures that can be made by exploring the concepts of points, lines, planes, and angles using technology. Consider how the use of technology may enhance the learning experience beyond what might be achieved through paper and pencil approaches.
To prepare for this Discussion:
• Bring to mind the technology tools you examined this week, such as web-based learning tools or dynamic geometry software. How might these tools be used with students to increase their understanding of the concepts of points, lines, planes, and angles? What challenges may arise when using these tools with students?
• Consider the importance of helping students see a relationship between the mathematics that they are learning and the application of these concepts in everyday life. How might technology tools be used to connect students to authentic, real-world geometry experiences?
• Reflect on the van Hiele levels of geometric thinking described in both the article “Van Hiele Revisited” and the course text reading. How might technology tools be used to present students with geometric experiences that will foster their advancement through the van Hiele levels?
By Day 3 of Week 2:
The paper should be this
Post an explanation of how to use a technology tool with students to increase their understanding of points, lines, planes, and angles. Point out any challenges that may arise while using the tool with students. Explain how the tool might be used to solve real-world geometry problems. Then, explain how the same technology tool might be used to present students with geometric experiences that will foster their advancement through the van Hiele levels. Share any additional resources and websites related to the technology tool that you found to be particularly helpful or informative.

Hostage Scenario Negotiation

Bradley is a 26-year-old male who married his high school sweetheart, Susan. Bradley served two years in Iraq. Since returning he and Susan haven’t been getting along. Bradley drinks often and verbally abuses Susan when he is drunk. He is very jealous and over-protective of Susan. They are expecting their first child. Susan attends classes at a local college and has been spending more and more time at the college and away from home and. Bradley has heard Susan talk frequently about her professor. He becomes violently jealous and suspects that Susan is having an affair with the professor. He then begins to wonder if the expected child is even his.

Bradley goes to the college to confront Susan and the professor. He is observed entering the classroom in army fatigues and carrying an Army duffle bag. Bradley is armed with an unknown number of weapons. He barricades the doors holding Susan, the professor, and nine other students against their will. The police are notified. They respond and contain the scene. You, the negotiator, are now on the scene.

1. The Commanding Officer calls. He advises you that a tactical assault team is ready to storm the building if you make significant progress in the negotiation. You make numerous calls into the classroom. The phone is answered by some of the students being held. They are frightened and crying. Bradley is heard screaming in the background that no one is leaving the room alive unless he can work some things out with his cheating wife. He refuses to get on the phone and talk to you.

a) Identify whether this is a hostage or non-hostage incident.

b) Identify and explain what stage of crisis Bradley is in at this time.

c) Is this incident negotiable? Explain why it is or isn’t negotiable.

2. After some time and continuous calls into the classroom Bradley answers the phone and speaks with you. Initially he is very upset and hangs up on you often. He rants about his service in Iraq and his unappreciative wife cheating on him at home. As time progresses, he begins to calm down, stays on the phone for longer periods of time, and begins to ask questions of you regarding how much trouble he may be in, how long he will have to go to jail, etc. He tells you he isn’t looking to hurt anybody, but isn’t ready to let anyone go. He then tells you that he will consider letting five of the students go for some food, a bottle of whiskey, and a promise that he doesn’t have to do any jail time.

a) Identify and explain Bradley’s instrumental and expressive demands. In this incident do you think one type of demand is more important to Bradley than the other? Why?

b) Identify and explain what stage of a crisis Bradley is in now.

c) How might you handle his demands?

d) Would you provide Bradley the alcohol for the release of some hostages? Why or why not? What might you consider when deciding whether to provide the alcohol? How would you handle this demand?

3. You have been negotiating now for about three hours. Nobody has been released, but no one has been injured. You are notified by command that the tactical team is going to assault the classroom in 30 minutes.

a) Do you think making a tactical assault to resolve the situation under these circumstances is appropriate? Why or why not?

b) What could you do or have done as a negotiator to assist the tactical team with their pending assault? Explain how that would help them.

Crime Prevention Program

The purpose of this project is to construct a crime prevention program. For your Final Project, you will assume the role of a social science researcher in charge of developing a new crime prevention program targeted toward juveniles in the K-12 school system.

In 10 – 15 Microsoft PowerPoint slides (not including the cover slide and reference slide), you will present your analysis of the overall program.

Your project should consist of two primary parts.

Part A consists of the proposal for a new crime prevention program targeted toward juveniles. Several crime prevention programs are found in K-12 schools nationwide with a standardized curriculum (i.e., D.A.R.E. and G.R.E.A.T.), with many more programs created at the local level (i.e., Big Brothers/Big Sisters and YMCA afterschool programs are unique to the community). For this section, identify three programs currently found in the K-12 school system, either national, state or local programs, and compare and contrast the programs in terms of goals and objectives, target population (e.g., who is receiving and participating in the program), and how and by whom the programs are delivered (i.e., taught by law enforcement officers, school counselors, individuals outside of the school system, etc.). Based on these comparisons, explain what elements you would place in your program and how your program will be delivered to the students. You should include your program’s goals and objectives, the target population (i.e., elementary school kids, 5th graders only, kids in each grade level, etc.), and how and by whom the program will be delivered.

Part B consists of an analysis of how your crime prevention program can be used to deter juvenile delinquency. Your analysis of your program should identify the following:

•How the program’s effectiveness will be analyzed

•How the objectives will be evaluated

•How deterrence will be measured and what will be considered effective deterrence

In the analysis of how your program will deter juvenile delinquency, you will want to use data from your three comparison programs to support your new program. For example, how many juveniles are enrolled in the program? In order to deliver the best programming possible for juveniles in the K-12 school system, calculate the optimal ratio of staff to the target population, based on the average ratio of the comparison programs. Your proposal and analysis should specifically identify the data source and include a summary of the data. In addition, you will want to specifically address how the data were used to inform your thinking on the development of your new program (i.e., how you used the data to solve a real-world problem).

Remember to cite applicable crime prevention theories and concepts you have studied throughout the course as they relate to your program.

Effective Business Partnerships

Effective Business Partnerships

Earlier in 2012, Microsoft Corporation and SUSE, an independent business unit of The Attachmate Group, Inc., announced a 4-year extension of their groundbreaking agreement reached nearly 5 years ago for broad collaboration on Windows and Linux interoperability and support (“Computer software; Microsoft and SUSE renew successful interoperability agreement,” 2011). This collaboration has been successful not only because the partners agree on shared risks, resources, rewards, and vision, but because it promotes interoperability and sets the stage for other business partnerships.

In the Required Resources, Jerry R. Mitchell, President/Founder of The Midwest Entrepreneurs Forum, argues that effective business partnerships are a function of four factors: (1) Shared Risk, (2) Shared Resources, (3) Shared Rewards, and (4) Shared Vision (Mitchell, 2004). He points out that building strong relationships with other organizations is often the best way to strengthen their own. Organizations can shore up weaknesses by accessing the strengths of others.

Imagine a scenario in which only two of the four factors are in place, but the C-suite (the highest level executives of your company) is determined to forge ahead. As an HR executive in this situation, how would you counsel the CEO, who believes that only having two of the four factors is sufficient? Assuming the CEO is correct, which two factors do you see as absolutely essential to a successful partnership? Explain your reasoning.

To complete this Assignment, respond to the following in a 3- to 4-page paper:

•Analyze Mitchell’s four factors of effective business partnerships.
?Analyze a successful business partnership, indicating which of the four factors were present.
?Analyze a failed business partnership, indicating which of the four factors were absent.
?Is it possible for a business partnership to succeed when none of the four factors are present? Under what circumstances?
•Examine HR’s responsibilities in a proposed business partnership where only two of the four factors are present.
?How should HR advise the CEO in this situation?
?From an HR perspective, which two factors do you consider to be most important, and why?

Leadership Style Inventory

USE THE FOLLOWING REPORT FOR THE LEADERSHIP INVENTORY:
Your Keirsey Temperament Sorter Results indicates that your personality type is that of the

Guardians (SJ’s) are the cornerstone of society, for they are the temperament given to serving and preserving our most important social institutions. Guardians have natural talent in managing goods and services–from supervision to maintenance and supply — and they use all their skills to keep things running smoothly in their families, communities, schools, churches, hospitals, and businesses.
Guardians can have a lot of fun with their friends, but they are quite serious about their duties and responsibilities. Guardians take pride in being dependable and trustworthy; if there’s a job to be done, they can be counted on to put their shoulder to the wheel. Guardians also believe in law and order, and sometimes worry that respect for authority, even a fundamental sense of right and wrong, is being lost. Perhaps this is why Guardians honor customs and traditions so strongly — they are familiar patterns that help bring stability to our modern, fast-paced world.
Practical and down-to-earth, Guardians believe in following the rules and cooperating with others. They are not very comfortable winging it or blazing new trails; working steadily within the system is the Guardian way, for in the long run loyalty, discipline, and teamwork get the job done right. Guardians are meticulous about schedules and have a sharp eye for proper procedures. They are cautious about change, even though they know that change can be healthy for an institution. Better to go slowly, they say, and look before you leap.
Guardians make up as much as 40 to 45 percent of the population, and a good thing, because they usually end up doing all the indispensable but thankless jobs everyone else takes for granted.
As a Provider (ESFJ), you can be very cooperative and enjoy serving the needs of people, especially those close to you. You approach tasks in an organized and thoughtful matter and are excellent with follow through and detail work. You enjoy working on projects that improve situations for people and enjoy working on committees and organizing celebrations. You are the keepers of tradition like special holidays, and go to great lengths to make sure people are cared and provided for.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER

Effective leaders have a high degree of self-awareness and know how to leverage their strengths in the workplace. Assessments are a valuable tool that professionals can use to learn more about themselves and consider how their temperament and preferences influence their interactions with others.
To further your self-knowledge, you are required to complete the Kiersey Temperament Sorter and the DiSC assessment, as indicated in this week’s Learning Resources. In addition, you are encouraged to take or review additional assessments (e.g., Myers-Briggs, a 360-degree evaluation) on your own.
As you engage in this learning process, it is important to remember that everyone—regardless of temperament type or related preferences—experiences some challenges with regard to leadership. The key to success is being able to recognize and leverage your own strengths while honoring differences among your colleagues.
To prepare:
Review the results of your leadership style inventories. Save a copy of your results for future reference. In addition, you are encouraged to complete additional assessments.
What aspects of your results surprised you? What aspects of your results were as you might have expected?
Think about the leadership example(s) you identified in the Discussion, your assessment results, and the information presented in this week’s Learning Resources. Have they helped you to form a more comprehensive view of yourself as a leader? What insights have arisen with regard to:
How you, personally, evaluate leadership effectiveness
Your own leadership style, preferences, and strengths
Potential challenges or areas in which you need to strengthen your leadership skills and competencies
Begin to create a plan for maximizing your strengths as a leader and neutralizing your weaknesses.
To complete:
Write a 1- to 2-page paper that addresses the following:
Summarize your leadership style, including your strengths for leading others. Refer to specific information from your inventory results, as well as insights gained from the Learning Resources and any research you completed on your own.
Describe potential challenges that you have experienced in the past or could foresee related to your leadership style.
Explain how you plan to improve your leadership competencies and effectiveness. Be specific in terms of your goals and plans related to your personal leadership development.

Greenfield Online Study

Question 1
Based on a survey of 1,000 adults by Greenfield Online and reported in a May 2009 USA Today Snapshot, adults 24 years of age and under spend a weekly average of $35 on fast food. If 200 of the adults surveyed were in the age category of 24 and under and they provided a standard deviation of $14.50, construct a 95% confidence interval for the weekly average expenditure on fast food for adults 24 years of age and under. Assume fast food weekly expenditures are normally distributed.

Question 2
An experiment ws designed to estimate the mean difference in weight gain for pigs fed ration A as compared with those fed ration B. Eight pairs of pigs were used. The pigs within each pair were littermates. The rations were assigned at random to the two animals within each pair. The gains (in pounds) after 45 days are shown below:
RationA RationB
65 58
37 39
40 31
47 45
49 47
65 55
53 59
59 51
Assuming weight gain is normal, find the 95% confidence interval estimate for the mean of the differences ?d where d= ration A – ration B.
