In the short clip entitled “How Racism Impacts Pregnancy Outcomes” several doctors explain the impact of racism and its stress levels on infant mortality, especially among black women. An example in the clip shows that black women with college degrees and white women with college degrees show vastly different infant mortality rates, where white women will have 3 in 1000 babies die while black women will have 10 in 1000 babies die. This particular example goes to prove that there is more at play than mere Socioeconomic Status.

Overall race has been known to contribute to longevity both for men and women. Our textbook states that the average lifespan for a blacks is 73.8 years while whites average around 78.9 years. Besides the stresses of finding a job as a black man or black woman due to racism, the everyday stress of racism eventually takes a toll on the human body. The clip mentions that while white people may have a stressful job during the day, increasing their blood pressure, their blood pressure will eventually level out during the night. This is not the case for black people. It is said that if a black person has high blood pressure during the day, it is likely that the high blood pressure will continue throughout the night. A good analogy is the idea of revving the engine of a car continously, never stopping, which will eventually lead to costly repairs and breakdowns in the machine
