Ethics, Values, and Social Responsibility in Human Resource Management

Question 2: Ethics, Values, and Social Responsibility
Instructions: Ethics has been broadly defined as concerning certain issues or situations as being fair/unfair, right/wrong, or just/unjust according to the values adopted by a given culture or society. These values act as the acceptable standards developed and nurtured by society. As societies have developed and become more knowledge-oriented and socially alert, the need for social responsibility has increased. According to Davis and Blomstrom (1975), social responsibility is “the obligation of decision makers to take actions which protect and improve the welfare of society as a whole along with their own interests” (p. 39).
Throughout the course of your graduate studies, you have studied a variety of social problems and issues.
• Identify and discuss the top five (5) ethical issues confronting your field of study.
• After you have briefly addressed each ethical issue, then rank them according to the literature in your field of study and/or by the importance placed upon them by the current media. As you rank them, please document your sources and justification for the ranking.
• Analyze each ethical issue according to its impact on the field, relevance to the current and future stakeholders in the field, and make any and all recommendations for improving such ethical issues, situations or dilemmas that impact your field of study. During this analysis, please consider the issue of social responsibility and how leaders in your field have addressed these ethical issues.

For a management assignment, the topic I chose is bonuses and pay in the banking industry, as an area of management. The idea is : what is the effects of pay and bonuses on the management of a given organization, in this case its banking. You can choose and compare banks from UK, USA, Hong Kong, Europe, etc.. Most importantly, provide academic sources like researches and journals.
Topic Ideas:

– How would it relate to financial crisis
– Compare before financial crisis and the situation after
The structure is as follows:
A- Introduction:
Introduction of the subject / company / issue
• Definition of the problem / issue / concept
• Short background
• Basic details. For example, provide core details of the business, such as the industry where the company operates, economies of scale (for example in which continents the business operates), where the organisation’s headquarters’ is located
• Any other relevant details
• What you are going to look at next within the assignment
• Short conclusion
B- Main body:
the main body should include:
– Definition of the concept (more detailed than in an introduction)
– Focus on building an argument by choosing business analytical
tools to support your view and other research
– Build a counter-argument for example by acknowledging limitations
of your argument; there will be different views of the writings that
you have chosen to support your arguments. All the business
analytical tools and theories have limitations.
– Providing an example(s) to illustrate your view
– Evaluate and analyse; avoid being descriptive and focus on
analysing why and how something is happening / not happening
rather than just describing the situation / outcome.
– Use illustrations / graphics / visual artefacts / creative outputs to
support and illustrate your views.
– Be aware of broader filed; do not be afraid to refer to other
disciplines within your text.
– Add recommendations based on your analysis if there are
recommendations to be made.
– Add conclusions of the main issues introduced within the main body.

Evolutionary Analysis of Crying by Human Infants

Birds are not the only animals in which offspring have special signals that appear to provide information to a parent. Develop an evolutionary analysis of crying by human infants in which you consider the two hypotheses outlined from page 311 to page 316. [Hint: the 2 theories are “competition” and “honest signal.” The 2 theories are clearly distinguished in the last paragraph on pp. 312]. Then employ the following data in evaluating your hypotheses: (1) young infants expend considerable energy when crying; (2) the growth rate for typical infants is highest during the first 3 months of life, with smaller and smaller portions of the energy budget thereafter going to growth as opposed to maintenance; (3) consumption of breast milk peaks at 3 to 4 months of age and then declines; (4) crying peaks at about 6 weeks of age and occurs progressively less often after 3 months of age, except when the child is being weaned; (5) babies who are carried everywhere and nursed on demand (as in traditional societies) cry far less than babies in Western societies; and (6) the high-pitched cries of unhealthy babies are considered especially unpleasant by adult listeners.
