In this course, you will look at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Since the first two threads of this module are so involved, I am going to consolidate our discussion of “In Corporations We Trust” into this single thread.
In this last chapter of the textbook, the author draws our attention to the global economic framework that shapes (and is shaped by) our current environmental circumstances. In order to sketch this framework, Steinberg, broadens the historical and geographic frame-of-reference to consider the role of the environment in U.S. political foreign policy since WWII. I’ve broken this discussion into two parts.
Following WWII, the U.S. government wielded a technological revolution in agriculture–the Green Revolution–as part of its Cold War policy to “contain” communism.
• What were the significant technological developments that gave rise to the Green Revolution? What role did Norman Borlaug play?
o What were the altruistic intentions for promoting the Green Revolution in Third World countries–i.e., in India, Philippines, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, and Egypt.
o In what way was it intended to serve the geopolitical interests of NATO in its Cold War standoff with the USSR?

You have been invited to be in charge of developing a team-building activity to improve collaboration, morale, and increased communication for your team members. Your department is closing for the day so you all can spend about four hours together in a team environment. Chip is a twenty-three-year-old maintenance worker who has two children and works a part-time job at night in addition to his full-time role. He is tired as he has been continuously working for many days.
Samir is fifty-five and works full-time, and cannot wait until he retires.
Sarah is the fifty-two-year-old negative department manager who complains about everyone else. However, she is a strong informal leader and has influence over the group.
Jerry is twenty-four and in graduate school. In fact, he is the president of his class and majors in business. He will likely leave in about one year when he graduates. He has a positive attitude and is currently a bit demotivated because no one likes to work together and there seems to be no direction at this point.
