Assignment 2: Negotiation, Ethics and Effective Leadership

The purpose of this assignment is to examine the relationship between negotiation, ethics, and effective leadership.

Use the Argosy University online resources or other credible sources on the Internet to locate and explore examples of President Obama’s negotiation and leadership skills with Iranian leaders in 2009. Evaluate how effective or ineffective his skills are in regard to U.S. relations with Iran and complete the following tasks:

Explore the role of deception and ethics in negotiation. Cite at least two examples of possible deception in the President Obama and Iranian leaders’ negotiation.
Discuss the effectiveness of President Obama’s negotiation tactics and explain how interests, goals, power and style impact the negotiation skills of a leader.
Describe and explain at least two tactics such as threats, ultimatums, bullying, blocking etc. which may have been used to derail the negotiation between the President and Iranian leaders.
Describe which rules of negotiation may have been broken during these negotiations. Use examples to support your response.
Discuss at least two strategies or actions which could have been adopted by the President to improve these negotiations. Justify your response.

Article Critique – Does Communication Matter in ALL Fields?

Read the article, A tool kit for the real world. In this article, the author discusses the importance of communication skills within a field that many people may not believe strong communication skills are necessary. Write a paper about your thoughts on this article. In your paper, be sure to also address the following:

Argue for or against the necessity of strong communication skills in every type of organization.
Discuss the type of organization that you want to work for in the future and why.
Evaluate how having strong communication skills will help you within that field.

Prepare the Notice of Appeal and the Cover Page for Sam Kant’s appellate brief that was assigned in Lesson Three. The trial court and the correct appellate court should be based on your jurisdiction.

Explain the difference between an external memo of law and an internal memo of law.

A critical element of a company’s operations management strategy is the efficient management and location of the company’s facilities. To take advantage of lower labor rates or easy access to raw materials and resources, several companies in the U.S. and Europe have looked to offshore operations including manufacturing, design, and customer service in low cost regions of the world such as China, India, Eastern Europe, or Southeast Asia. In recent years, there are indications that some companies are looking to reverse the offshoring trend. For example, from the end of 2102 and through 2013, GE moved manufacturing of appliances from China to Kentucky, and Lenovo opened a design center in North Carolina.

Using the module readings, the University online library resources, and the Internet, research a company with global operations. Based on your research, respond to the following:

Briefly describe the company’s strategy with respect to regional location of its facilities for manufacturing, design, research and development, marketing, and customer service.
How has the company’s strategy evolved with respect to global location of facilities?
What challenges is the company facing in the current environment?
How can the company be more efficient in how it manages the global location of facilities in response to these challenges?

Write a two to four (2-4) page talking paper in which you:

Synthesize the concept of motivation, and examine the substantial reasons why motivation is difficult to understand.
Evaluate the potential effectiveness of the model positioning of motivation, and propose at least one (1) action that the organization can take in order to apply the concept.
Detail the feedback control loop, and suggest one (1) way that the organization can use the feedback control loop to determine whether management’s actions are motivating or demotivating.
Assess the manner in which leaders can influence employee motivation through goal setting, impression management, and encouragement.

Bivariate Regression

Regression analysis is a powerful and commonly used tool in business research. One important step in regression is to determine the dependent and independent variable(s).

In a bivariate regression, which variable is the dependent variable and which one is the independent variable?

What does the intercept of a regression tell? What does the slope of a regression tell?
What are some of the main uses of a regression?

Provide an example of a situation wherein a bivariate regression would be a good choice for analyzing data.

Types of Regression Analyses

There are two major types of regression analysis—simple and multiple regression analysis. Both types consist of dependent and independent variables. Simple linear regression has two variables—dependent and independent. Multiple regression consists of dependent variable and two or more independent variables.

How does a multiple regression compare with a simple linear regression?
What are the various ways to determine what variables should be included in a multiple regression equation?
Compare and contrast the following processes: forward selection, backward elimination, and stepwise selection.

Primary Task Response: Have you ever attended a play or musical? Do you frequently watch television programs or movies? Nowadays, drama is more popular in American culture than ever before. Yet what some forget is that it is a literary art form crafted by playwrights, TV and comedy writers, and Hollywood screenwriters. Drama shares many of the same elements as fiction and poetry; however, this literary genre is designed to be acted out on a stage or “dramatized” in front of screen audiences.

After you read the assigned essays in the textbook (and possibly the optional Seinfeld episode, “The Pitch”), please discuss the following questions in a 500 word response.

Why, in your opinion, are dramas known as “plays?”
