In defense of public education
In the book power of their ideas: Lessons for America from a small school in Harlem by Meier Deborah, she starts by trying to convince readers that public school education is better in comparison to the private schools including the church schools education that many people favor.
She starts by explaining how she made up her mind to school her kids in the public schools in contrast to her parents who sent her to a private school. Basing her experience as a teacher she claims that children in their early stages of learning have the ability to unlock various potentials in them. This according to her is well brought out in public schools as compared to other types of schools.
The writer acknowledges that in public schools children sit together regardless the social background. This brings out the idea that in public schools all children interact with each other which in turn fosters their growth in terms of socialization with other people of different social classes. The writer also notes that in public schools not only the children get to socialize but also all parents get to socialize with other parents during the school parent meetings.
In a bid to encourage the readers to support the public school education the writer says if people abandon their concern about the schools in favor of private schools it will be like leaving the children with an unknown baby sitter. Privatizing of schools also removes democratic right of controlling the schools. Without democracy to control the school therefore there is no democracy for the parents to control the way in which their children are going to lead democratic lives in future.
The book then goes on to explain the changes that have taken place in the public schools as well as the disadvantages or advantages that go along with the changes.
