In the summer of 1961 the German Democratic Republic made the decision to erect a wall in the city of Berlin that would separate the east from the west. A statement was issued by the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic informing the GDR citizens of the decision. In this statement the council lists several reasons for the construction of the wall.
