You must use at least three of the books we read this
semester as sources. The subject choice is yours, but we will be brainstorming potential
topics as a class. The only requirement is that it fits the time frame and theme of the class,
and addresses the historical precept of change over time. Once you start your research you
may find new questions to answer. Many research papers do not end up answering the
original question, and that is fine. That is part of the fun of doing history. Don’t wait until the
end of the semester to write your paper. As we encounter individuals and ideas in the
readings, keep track of your thoughts. I will be more than happy to read a draft and offer
feedback if you like, though it is not required. Be pro-active about your work! You cannot do
proper historical work overnight, and it will show. Take your time to craft something you are
proud of
There are six books for this course. Bring your book to class. We will be consulting
them frequently.
