Write a research paper on a current Texas public policy issue or concern that is not related to the past. Develop your Internet and library research skills. Evaluate your topic from the perspective of different cultures and viewpoints as well as your own. Improve your writing and critical thinking skills. Topic Selection You are to choose a topic that involves Texas governmental policy. Refer to chapters 11-14 of the textbook for ideas. The topic must exam some aspect of government that highlights your responsibilities a citizen in a democratic society. If you have doubts about the topic you selected, please contact the instructor. Writing the Bibliography Sheet (Work Cited page) Use the Internet or library to find the sources on your topic from newspapers, journals, or books. On a full sheet of paper, type your name, Government 2306, the day & time of your class, and your topic. Cite at least four (4) sources using MLA (Modern Language Association) guidelines. Additional sources may be added later. You may use the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers at the checkout desk of the library or any similar publication to help you write your citations in the correct format. There are many on-line resources on MLA format that are helpful. Guidelines for Writing the Paper Correct typographical errors by proofreading your final paper. Use words correctly & eliminate spelling errors by looking up definitions & spellings of words in the dictionary. Try to eliminate grammatical errors & awkward sentence structures. Use a variety of sentence patterns & lengths. Reduce wordiness by not using redundant or irrelevant words in the same sentence, e.g., if you can write a twelve & twenty word sentence expressing the same idea, use the former. Pay attention to paragraphing & organization by possibly outlining your ideas on paper before writing them in prose. Superior papers generally must be revised several times. Be sure to do your own work. Your personal effort is better than a polished paper written by someone else. Don’t rely too heavily on the words of the authors. This is an assignment of original work; do not use another person’s paper or your own paper from another class or school. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS POLICY IS CONSIDERED PLAGIARISM OR ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AND WILL RESULT IN A GRADE OF F FOR THE ASSIGNMENT. Cite all sources. When you borrow ideas, paraphrase, or quote from someone, acknowledges your sources with footnotes. (Webster’s New World Dictionary defines “paraphrase” as “a rewording of the meaning expressed in something spoken or written.”) Follow the MLA guidelines in citing your sources. Do not use quotations unless it adds significantly to the paper. Use of more than 5% of paper content as a quote will result in a grade F. To improve your grade, confer with me throughout the writing of the paper. Don’t wait until a few days before the writing assignment is due to discuss any problems about it. Grading Criteria Content—WAS THE TOPIC APPROPRIATE TO THE ASSIGNMENT. If you have focused on an issue, address the various sides of the issue and conclude in your paper which one or ones are best and why. If you are writing about a problem, explain the various solutions to the problem and write about which one or ones are best and why based on your research. Compare and contrast the different viewpoints of American and/or foreign sources on your topic. Paper length—a minimum of 1000 words of text, type-written double spaced. This excludes headings or any other non-text lines such as title page and work cited page. Everything else being equal, the longer your paper, the better. Organization—Organize your ideas by writing from an outline. Focus—Narrow your topic. A focused discussion is better than a broad presentation of a topic that does not cover anything very well. Writing style—with few or no typographical errors, misspelled words, and grammatical errors. Use proper paragraphing and improve your writing style by revising the paper as many times as necessary. Citations—anytime you borrow someone’s ideas, paraphrase or quote them, cite all sources using MLA guidelines. Sources— At least 4 sources will be used. DO NOT use sources such as the textbook, dictionaries and encyclopedias, Wikipedia, about.com ask.com or other general information sources are not appropriate sources for an academic paper. These will not be counted as one of your 4 sources. The more you cite and use, the better. You will not be given credit for using sources from your bibliography unless you actually use and cite them in the body of your paper. Components of the Completed Paper A typed cover page with your name; Government 2306; day & time of the course, e.g., MWF 8:30-9:20 or TTh 10:00-11:20 or on-line; & title of your topic. The main body of the paper explaining the significance of the issue, problem, or situation. MLA citations of sources. Explain how everyday people change American society after World War II?Essay exam #3 includes the assigned class material from chapters 26-30. Use only material assigned for this class. Do NOT use non-class material. Do NOT use outside material. Prompt: How did everyday people change American society after World War II? Hints: Everyday people can include individuals, groups of people, or organizations. They are meant to be everyday people and not those in positions of power in government. I am looking for the actions taken by people that result in change in the society. Each category should have a verb to show the action. The best categories are very broad and allow for multiple examples from multiple chapters. This essay is intended to be a view of the material from 30,000 feet, rather than close up. You do not need to explain in detail each of your examples. The goal is to use the examples to prove your argument. Provide your example and then a footnote to show the source. Your essay structure should follow the required format and include three kinds of actions (including an action verb to show the change) and not be three periods of time or three groups of people. Provide evidence for many different people- think about race, class, gender, etc. Don’t focus only on one group. Be specific- include names, dates, legislation, primary source quotations- rather than general statements. This essay is like a puzzle and requires you to check that you have used all of the assigned sources. I do not recommend waiting until the last day to write the paper. I recommend following the steps I have suggested over the week the essay is assigned. I will not read more than seven pages of essay text and footnotes and any sources used on those additional pages will not count. Citations/Plagiarism: Divide your bibliography into groups: textbook, primary sources, lectures, and film clips. Label each group and alphabetize the sources within each group (see sample bibliography). Do not just list all of the assigned sources in bibliography. Your bibliography must only include the sources that you include in the footnotes. If you include other sources, it is a misrepresentation of the sources that you used in the essay and will be considered a form of plagiarism. Your essay must include footnotes (individual citations at the bottom of each page) AND a bibliography (a list of sources you used in the essay, divided by category). If either of these things are missing, your essay will be graded without references and you will receive zeros for each use of sources category and the Chicago Formatting category. The written sources (textbook and primary sources) must include page numbers in footnotes. If you don’t include page numbers for either the textbook or the primary sources, you will receive a zero for that category. The submission will be checked for plagiarism. Essay Structure- Essay #3 Sample Outline The required structure for this essay is the five-paragraph essay. It is not actually five paragraphs, but there are five sections– the introductory paragraph, three sections of evidence (IIA, IIB, IIC), and the concluding paragraph. The thesis statement (your argument) is the last sentence of the first paragraph. The main argument, the thing you want to convince your reader of, is in orange. You will repeat the main argument in your topic sentences and your conclusion. The main argument is proven by the three categories (in red, green, and blue). Each category will become a section in the body of the essay. The body of your essay will have three sections of evidence. Each of the three evidence sections should have a topic sentence. This is a mini thesis for the section. The topic sentence restates the main argument (in orange) and then includes one of the three categories of evidence (in red, green, or blue) in the order listed in the thesis statement. The concluding statements (a restatement of your argument) is the first sentence of your last paragraph. You can cut and paste your thesis. Your conclusion is NOT the last sentence of the essay. I give you this very formulaic essay format to provide you with a basic essay format. Since most students in the class are not history majors, this gives you an essay structure which then allows you to focus on the historical content. For those of you who are more creative writers, you will dislike the narrow structure that I am requiring. It is still required. This outline structure is meant to help you develop your essay. Send off, such as significance of topic, relevance to today Essay Exam #3 Information and Formatting You will write a 4-7-page essay that addresses the prompt. This essay is a broader look at all of the assigned material for this essay. You will go into less detail about any one source used that when you learn the material each week. For examples. you don’t need to provide a long explanation of the background of a primary source, just include a quote and footnote to use that source as evidence in support of your argument. You should include information from four categories: 1) all textbook chapters, 2) all assigned primary source readings, 3) all lectures and 4) all film clips. Use only material assigned for this class. Do NOT use non-class material. Do NOT use outside material. You are demonstrating your knowledge of the class material in the assigned chapters so you should use as many examples as possible from the categories. The purpose of the essay exam is to demonstrate that you have learned the assigned material. The majority (75%) of your grade will come from your inclusion of that assigned material. Assigned material included the textbook chapter, the primary sources, lectures and the film clips. Textbook chapters have the most information and require multiple references from each chapter. Each of the other sources should include at least one reference. In order to include all of the required material, you will have to plan ahead and double check your sources.
