Topics
Complete 2 essays on 2 of the topics below (1 essay per topic).
Topic 1: Synchronizing Flow throughout the Supply Chain
Effective supply chain management involves the synchronizing of three flows throughout the supply
chain – information, products, and funds. Choose a company that you are familiar with, such as Ikea,
Wal-mart, Future Shop or any other large retailer, and imaginatively describe how these flows might
occur in such an operation. Draw from your own experience, common sense, and personal observations
as much as possible or, alternatively, if you are most familiar with your own company, use it as an
example.
Topic 2: Continuous Process Improvement
An important aspect of today’s quality systems is the concept of continuous improvement. All of us, at
some time, were frustrated and said to ourselves: “This could be improved!” Take an example of any
process that you think could be improved and (1) draw a process map representing how it works now –
identify the bottlenecks, redundancies or blocks that make it inefficient, (2) when the process map is
complete, write a brief analysis of how the process you have chosen could be improved. You can use
any practical example you wish – from waiting in line at a fast food restaurant to examples from your
own job, such as problems in the warehouse, or how information is managed, etc.
Topic 3: Pricing Strategies
Write a brief essay on pricing strategies and when, how, and why they are used by companies to gain
market share, introduce new products, and increase the turn-over of their products or services.
Describe and give outside examples of companies using different kinds of pricing strategies.
Topic 4: Marketing of Services
Freight forwarding is very much a service oriented industry. Write a brief essay on how marketing
services differs from marketing a physical product or commodity. Give practical examples from the
freight forwarding industry to make your points.
Topic 5: Global Supply Chain Management
Discuss the major forces that have made global sourcing and global supply management a reality for
many contemporary businesses and industries. Give consideration to historical factors, technological
changes and the evolution of free trade and other market forces.
