Literature Review (Due March 27, 2012)
For this assignment, you will gather source material that is relevant to all angles of your topic and present it to your readers in a coherent way. One of the easiest ways to do this is to set up your essay as a literature review. A literature review is basically an account of what has been published on a topic by credible sources. In the end, a lit review may look and feel like a collection of summaries of previously published works, but it’s actually a bit more than that. A lit review not only summarizes key points of the different angles of your topic but also shows readers the main controversies and arguments on the topic in an organized way so they can begin to think about their own views on the issues. Note that you will simply summarize what others have stated about your topic; you don’t want to make judgments about particular arguments surrounding the topic. At this point in the research project, your job is to inform, not persuade.
Gathering Sources
To fully inform your readers about the multiple aspects of the paper, it is important to gather sources from a variety of places. Take into account age, gender, cultural leanings, etc. when you think about what publications to choose. You don’t, for example, want to collect too many sources from a magazine that is clearly biased towards strictly liberal views. Also, vary the types of sources you use. Although it is easy to gather information from websites, also seek to gather information from books, pamphlets, etc. You may also want to interview expert sources for information. Look for reputable publications online as well as the print versions. A good rule to follow: If it ends in .com or if it has “wiki” in the title, you most likely want to avoid it (of course, exceptions, as always, may apply). Good places to go on the internet: Organizations, government sites, educational sites, online publications, etc.
Reading Sources
Once you have gathered your sources, you are ready to read through them for relevant information. I would suggest that you highlight, write in margins, make notes, etc. to determine exactly what might be useful in each source. Note: You may need to read more sources than necessary; you may find that a few sources that you thought were good simply won’t work.
Writing about Sources
Once you have gathered enough relevant sources, you will need to include a brief summary (usually this will be one or two long paragraphs) of them in your essay, using quotes to enhance the points. Be aware that you may not need to summarize the entire article; it may just be necessary to include the parts that pertain directly to your topic. You must also decide how to organize them so that they flow within your paper. You want your readers to logically follow one source to another so that they can follow the arguments. It’s up to you how you choose to do this. For example, you might want to organize the essay so that the sources that agree come first and then the sources that disagree come later. Or, it might make sense to organize the sources chronologically. Whatever way you choose to do this, you must still link them all together with transitions that illustrate for your reader the relationship between sources.
Your assignment is to write a five to seven page literature review on the research you have gathered for your topic. You must use at least eight sources that cover multiple angles of your topic, and the essay must be set up in a way that logically organizes the arguments.
