Schools and Neighborhoods
Neighborhoods play an important role in the peaceful coexistence among community members, as well as impacting heavily on social, cultural, economic and educational growth. This paper gives an analysis of the neighborhood around the University of Wisconsin, located in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, based on the three conceptualizations including site, perception, and social network.
Madison is a busy city, being the capital of the U.S state of Wisconsin, with a population of approximately 233, 209 according to 2010 estimates (American FactFinder, 2013). It comes second after the city of Milwaukee, and has been described as a city of four lakes, since it comprises of four successive lakes surrounding it. The city has approximately 102, 516 households, with about 22.2% of the population being under the age of 18. The median age is 31, out of which 49.2% are males and 50.8% are females. Compared to its neighboring cities, Madison emerges the second in crime rate statistics, with an average of 256.3 against Monona which has 286.5 (American FactFinder, 2013). The safest city has an average of 69.2 – that is Wunakee, which shows just how dangerous Madison is. Although in both classes of crimes, that is, violent crimes and property crimes, Madison always emerged slightly below average according to 2011 U.S. crime statistics, it still poses considerable threat to the people around it.
Based on the above statistics, it can be perceived that Madison is not a very safe place. However, crimes committed are not done in the public, and police reports show that violent crimes are mostly done among people with personal vendetta. Apart from statistical data on crimes, on the other hand, the people of Madison are friendly and welcoming. This speaks against the crime rate figures presented above. In 1996, Money Magazine ranked the city as the best place to live in the United States (Nolen, 2000). Its low unemployment rate is considered as a major contributor to its attractiveness, as well as its level of post-secondary affiliates; the city is home to four major institutions namely: Edgewood College, University of Wisconsin, Madison Media Institute, and Madison Area Technical College (Nolen, 2000). In addition to the wide species of fish that reside within its lakes, Madison has beautiful sites for camping, parks, as well as rare species of birds. The boundary of the neighborhood of the University of Wisconsin covers the entire territorial boundaries of the city of Madison, and includes a close relationship with other tertiary colleges around.
As mentioned earlier, the city of Madison is among the best places to live in the United States. This means that social ties are quite strong among neighbors, and people appreciate one another. The students of the University of Wisconsin, I being one of them, engage in friendly sporting activities with the three other colleges, and also occasionally participate in community work through offering support to children’s homes and community clean-ups. Since this city is the county seat of Dane County, various government officials reside here, and county headquarters of ministries and government agencies are within this neighborhood (Nolen, 2000). Therefore, if one had a problem that needed government intervention, the county head office would be the correct destination. Law enforcement authorities are also open to public service, and can provide real help when someone develops complications on matters of security. Otherwise, social problems can be solved within the university by the help of other students, or by the university counselors. The strong social linkages among residents of this area provide a natural safety and friendly atmosphere for peaceful coexistence.
