Third Essay: Disciplinary Essay
For this assignment, you will pick up your potential major or the discipline you are interested in from USF and prepare an essay by introducing this to your audiences, who are still undecided about their majors. They are willing to decide their major fields or who are considering different career options. The purpose of this assignment is to inform incoming freshmen students about the discipline you are interested in and convince them to take up this particular subject as their major as well. You will help your audiences understand how writing is used to create and communicate knowledge in this field (your major), and familiarize them with online resources (i.e. program websites), and academic texts, such as books, journal articles, and web texts, existing in the field.
This assignment will also assist your audiences to become better readers and writers in the discipline of their interest. Since this is a research essay, you are required to do some research by using the library database to find related books, journal articles, or online texts in the discipline and use them as resources to help you develop your essay (see pp. 339-44 in book for conducting online research). You are required to analyze at least four sources to support your project: a textbook from the discipline, one scholarly article from that discipline, one interview you hold with a professor or an expert from that discipline, and the available sources from your department’s website, such as brochure, flyer or any useful description about the program.
