Response to Ballenger’s Research Study Questions
1. “Portion of men whose attractiveness is judged by U.S. women to be “worse than average: 4/5”
Recently, a “fact” drawn from Harper’s magazine contained a social critique in which American women apparently expressed their ungenerous view about male attractiveness in the United States. In the critique, U.S. women judged that on attractiveness, four out of five men are worse than average (Ballenger). However, based on what I have been noting on male attractiveness in the recent past, I find that the majority of American men are attractive. Or is it that I only take note of the attractive male Americans and the really ugly ones? Nonetheless, this “fact” is no surprise to me. Assuming that it is true, my assumptions would be that men spend less time making themselves attractive than women do. In this regard, men are considered as less attractive.
However, I surely doubt that on a scale of attractiveness, four out of five men are worse than average. I will have to do my own thorough field observation at the college and check this out. I am not entirely ruling out the possibility that this “fact” is true. The study may actually be legit, depending on the things that the researcher considered to be attractive on the American man while conducting his study. Personally, I would rate male attractiveness on a scale based on things such as race (though I am not saying I am racist), weight, age, and his dressing code.
2. “Portion of women whose attractiveness is judged by U.S. men to be ‘worse than average’: 2/5”
The researcher, from Harper’s magazine, stated, “Portion of women whose attractiveness is judged by U.S. men to be ‘worse than average’: 2/5” (Ballenger). This means that on a scale of attractiveness, men judged that two out of five women are worse than average. This reflects the apparent generous view that American men have about the attractiveness of their female counterparts. Harper’s magazine research results reported on the male ends are a reflection of the impression that American men do not hate American women. Nonetheless, the study’s results are not a surprise to me because I think that predominantly, women focus more on making themselves look attractive than men do. Consequently, women are truly more attractive than men.
In this regard and as highlighted in the above paragraphs, both of the “facts” reported by the magazine reflect that both men and women have isolated themselves into the stereotypes that the society has allotted; that women are more picky than men. Also, both facts can be explained from the point of view that men care less about how attractive they are while women give a lot of attention to their general attractiveness. Also, it can be deduced from the study that women, on one hand, are, beyond belief, less satisfied with their male counterparts while men, on the other hand, are more contented with their female counterparts. If someone on the street approached me to give my thoughts on these two “facts”, I would probably be provoked, bearing in mind the suggestive tone of the never-ending stereotypes of American men and women that these two ideas have. Afterwards, I would base my argument on the ideas that I have presented herein. Nonetheless, I would tell them that my own observational research on the attractiveness scale of both males and females would inform a better response from me on the same subject.
