Martin, Gilbert. The Holocaust: a history of the Jews of Europe during the Second World War. New York: H. Holt, 1987. 959pp.

The book contains a black cover and red writings on it. It has picture, which is also reddish in color.

The author of this book is giving a chronological account of events about the history of the Jewish history. The history in which the author is talking about is the time when the Jews were being exterminated out of Europe by the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler (Gilbert 23). The author has used testimonies of those people who survived the holocaust to give a very good history of how the Jews were being exterminated. In the book, there are several points that the author has clearly talked about.

The first point that the author has clearly talked about in this book is how the Jews were being exterminated. This was done by the use of the holocaust. Holocaust is a form of massacre where all the people who are being massacred are put together and then, they are burnt as a whole. It is a kind of a sacrifice where people are burnt when they are many. The Nazis at that time were using gas chambers to kill or execute the Jews in Europe. This was very horrific and very inhuman because the Nazis did not care about what they were doing to the Jews. Additionally, they did not care the age bracket in which they were using to execute the Jews.

The second point in which the author is trying to talk about in this book is the unsung heroes who were able to survive and save others from the execution. The Jews were being executed cruelly with the use of gas chambers and there were no chances of survival or escaping from the prisons, which they were kept in by the Nazis. Therefore, those who were able to escape from the prisons or the holocaust, could be called heroes especially those who saved others and died for them as they were trying to save them. The author says that they are not recognized in anyway.

The last point in which the author tries to talk about in the book is the emotional part of the extermination of the Jews during that time (Gilbert 15). The Jews were being exterminated with a lot of cruelty by the Nazis and the whole scenario was very horrific considering the fact that this people were being burnt alive. This was a very trying time for all the families of the deceased. Additionally, it was more emotionally disturbing to those people who were able to survive the holocaust because of the memories of what they saw being done to their friends and relatives.

The author has portrayed the above points by making the reader to be part of the whole ordeal. When the readers are reading this book, they feel as if they are in the book or in the story because the author has a good style of narrating the whole story. The author narrates the story using a chronological account of events where the readers follow through as if they are in the story. This kind of style that is being used by the author also helps the readers to know the different times in which certain events occurred with ease, that is, without having to look for it in the whole book. In order for the author to be able to use this, the author has used several sources like primary sources where real testimonies of the people who were involved in the holocaust are being used.

When the readers are reading the book, they usually get an emotional attachment because of the way the author is narrating the story. The author is using correct grammar, which is readable, to show these emotions. In conjunction to this, the author has been able to provide the readers with real testimonies of those people who were there at the time of the holocaust and those people who are Jews and were able to escape from the holocaust itself (Gilbert 74). When the readers read the information, they usually become emotionally attached to the book, which makes them feel attached to those Jews who were being executed at the time of the holocaust.

By doing this, the author has made the readers to be more involved and attached to the story making them want even to continue with the story even after it has ended.

In the book, the author has used the correct grammar to narrate the story. Therefore, there are no grammatical mistakes or errors in the book. This has added value and credibility to it. Additionally, the author has tried to use some words that are very useful in improving the grammar of the book. The author has also tried to explain clearly making it easy for the readers to be able to understand the story of the Nazis and the Jews. He has also used some phrases to increase the quality of the grammar in the book. For example, “Jealousies were fermented,” (Gilbert 20). This is a grammatical phrase used to show that jealousy had escalated between the Nazis and the Jews.

In conclusion, the author has used primary sources to come up with the story of the holocaust where the Nazis were executing the Jews. These primary sources are real testimonies of those people who were involved in the holocaust. Moreover, the book has been cited by other authors when they were doing their own research or they were writing their own books. The author of the book has given a complete history of what happened between the Nazis and the Jews. In addition, the author has used the correct grammar, which is readable by any kind of readers who want to read this book. Therefore, the author has explained all the points, which were important in the history of the holocaust by the use of correct grammar and credible sources.
