DICHOTOMOUS KEYS
Keys that are based upon successive choices between two alternatives are known as dichotomous keys (dichotomous means to “fork into two equal parts”). One use of dichotomous keys is to organize large amounts of information so identifications can be made more easily.
Dichotomous Key for Bacterial Unknowns
Make a dichotomous key that will allow you to identify your bacterial unknowns based on Gram reactions, morphologies and the metabolic assays that we have done in lab. Make sure you have a key for both Gram + and Gram – organisms. There are many ways to make a useful key, so your key may not resemble the keys made by other students.
Once you have your dichotomous key, turn it in to your instructor. You can do this during the lab period (please make sure it is legible), or you can take it home to work on it, provided you return it to your instructor at least 3 days before the next lab. Your instructor will check it to make sure that it will work, and will return it to you by the next lab period when you will inoculate your chosen media with your unknown bacteria.
