Job Search Report on Potential Employers

Subject: Job Search Report on Potential Employers

In addition to the body of the report, the following are to be included:

• Headings
• Visuals (tables, charts, etc.) (at least two)
• Works Cited (preferably MLA style)
• Notes (if any)
• Appendices (if any)

The report can be structurally divided into introduction, body, and conclusion. In the introduction, provide brief information about your own professional background and career objectives or ambitions. Also, give a list of potential employers/companies (at least three) you have researched on, as well as your reasons for selecting them in your job search.

In the body section, you need to set some criteria (at least four) for your research directions and decision making (location, company culture, salary, benefits, career advancement, promotion opportunity, etc., can all be criteria). Your criteria should help the reader understand why you have decided to choose Company B instead of A and C as your career target, even though the latter may look more appealing to an outsider. For instance, you may explain that family is your top priority and therefore location is on the top of the list of your criteria.

You should present, clearly and in detail, the methods of your research: i.e., how and where you have gathered information about those potential employers/companies. For instance, did you interview someone from a company or in your field of interest? what is his/her position? and what questions did you ask in the interview? Or, did you do intensive research on the selected list of potential employers/companies? and how? (Research on companies can be done in many ways: for example, through their annual reports, company Websites, personnel manuals or other policy guidelines, graduates of your college or university now working for the firm, company newsletters and in-house magazines, stock reports, former and current employees of the company, media reports, etc.)

Also present your findings in the body section. Make sure the data presented is relevant to the criteria you have established. For example, you will list salary ranges of different companies for an entry-level college graduate, if salary is one of your criteria. (Otherwise, don’t list them.) And an effective way to help the reader understand your findings is to incorporate visuals like charts, tables, etc., in the report. After presenting the research findings, make sure that you go through a discussion/interpretation section so that the reader can clearly see what those findings really mean. (A matrix would be a very helpful tool for discussion and analysis.)

In the conclusion section, present your general conclusion about the research findings and your decision of which employer/company will be your target career wise. Your career goal must be practical (within your reach) and be reasonable (logically related to the criteria you have set given your own background).
