My planned focus is to illustrate how the social media has transcended the age barrier by allowing the young and old to access similar content from the Internet. I intend to define what identity is, and compare how the young and old social media users identify themselves over the Internet. As previously indicated, social media has a significant influence on an individual’s identity because it has an impact on people’s behaviors. I plan to illustrate how an individual’s identity determines his or her role in social groups including the online community. Identity also has strong influences a person’s cultural beliefs and political affiliations. The ideas I plan to use in this project include the common reasons offered by people of different ages for using social media. I intend to use statistical data on such as the Pew Research Center report on the use of social network by individuals of various age groups in 2012 used in the previous project. This will help me in preparing the PowerPoint presentation by allowing me to use visual aids in terms of graphs and charts to elaborate my arguments.
My revision on the previous report would be to update the statistics on the use of social media. I believe that there have been changes in the social media usage across different age groups since 2012 that should be reflected in my new project. I will also explore how different age groups use other social media websites for their online interactions. I have chosen to focus on the changes that have occurred in online activities across various age groups because I believe that the inception of websites such as WhatsApp have changed how individuals use social media to interact. Twitter has also emerged as a powerful website for seeking news, as it is the most popular social media site with many journalists. The first project focused on Facebook and overlooked other sites that are also important social media platforms.
My planned delivery method will be using PowerPoint presentations to discuss the impact of social media on people’s identities. I have chosen this method because it will allow me to discuss important concepts that may be unclearly conveyed using other modes of presentations. PowerPoint presentations are active and they will allow me to interact with my audience effectively. The PowerPoint presentation will also enable me to present charts and graphs that illustrate the use of social media across different age groups. I consider video an ineffective method of presenting the topic because it does not give the audience ample time to analyze various concepts or understand the meaning of graphs and charts.
My purpose for the project will be to illustrate the impact of social media on people’s identities. I will analyze how people define themselves and how they use the social media. However, my intention will be to base my presentation and arguments on recent statistical data relevant to the topic. I will also seek to evaluate how individuals of different age groups use various social media websites. Although Facebook remains popular among many social media users, I believe that other websites such as Twitter and WhatsApp are important to the presentation. My audience for the presentation will be my instructor and fellow students. My role will be collecting statistical data from various sources and preparing the presentation. My instructor’s role will be will be to evaluate my project and presentations.
