Your final paper for History 315 is a critical literature review of three articles you’ve read on a topic of your choice.
What is a Critical Literature Review?
It may help to think of a critical literature review as a book/article review on steroids! In an article or book review, your job is to re-state, in your own words, a scholar’s overall argument and provide a summary about how the scholar arrived at her/his conclusions.
A critical literature review differs from an ordinary book/article review in these ways:
You provide concise summaries of more than one book/article.
In addition to telling your reader about the scholars’ arguments, you also provide the reader your overall thoughts about the articles you’ve read.
You point out similarities or major differences among the scholars in terms of the subjects they cover, their points of view, and their conclusions
Finally, you decide what makes these scholars’ works important in the field. You determine the articles’ significance.
Here’s a sample outline to help you:
I INTRODUCTION
A. First Paragraph: Introduce the reader to the general subject. You’ve read articles related to what?
B. Second Paragraph: Let the reader know your thoughts about the major similarities or differences you find important and why these articles are significant in the study of the particular subject–THIS IS YOUR ARGUMENT
II BODY OF PAPER
A-H. Using two or three paragraphs per article, provide concise summaries of the articles you read. Be sure to:
Restate, in your own words without using quotes, the author’s main point and why the author’s main point is significant.
Summarize the author’s sub-points? What are they?
Describe how the author proves her/his point?
Describe the evidence he/she uses to make their points.
Provide an example of the author using evidence to prove his/her main point.
Identify statements in the article that support, contradict, or modify the main ideas of other articles you’ve read about this topic.
III CONCLUSION

Briefly state what you learned from reading these articles
B. Second Paragraph
Summarize what other ideas or points you think the authors should have considered.
Describe the questions you hope that future research on this topic can answer.
Summarize why you believe this research is important and why–AS IT RELATES TO THE THEMES RAISED IN THE CLASS.
