Assignment Guidelines: Critique of Research Study
Each student will select a QUANTITATIVE or QUALITATIVE research article to critique. The articles can be one of the studies identified in the review of the literature. Students are required to use the textbook or another source as a guide for the critique. Critique is based on the methodology of the study. The following content must be addressed in your paper.
The Critique Should Include The Following Sections Of The Research Study Selected
NOTE: do not critique the abstract or reference pages of the study
Do not answer the below as noted. These points should be included in the paper following APA guidelines. The following are aspects of a research critique that should be considered.
The outline may be different based on the guidelines of the reference/resource utilized to conduct the critique.
Protection of Human Subjects
Did the researcher(s) clearly state that one or more Institutional Review Boards approved the study? What organization(s) were the IRB’s affiliated? If not stated that the research received approval from an IRB what are your thoughts regarding the absence of approval?
Rationale of the study
Did the researcher(s) clearly present literature to explain why this topic aroused his or her curiosity in the research topic? Describe the relevance of the literature. Did the researcher(s) clearly explain the rationale for selecting this topic? Explain
Was the explanation clear to you the reader? Explain
Purpose of study: Was it clearly stated?
What did the researcher intend to study? Is the purpose statement clearly stated or described? Describe
Hypotheses/Research Questions
Are hypotheses clearly stated? If Yes describe/If no explain why there might not be a hypotheses. What is the research question(s)? Is the research question(s) clearly stated in the reported study?
Theoretical Framework
Was a theoretical framework clearly described? If yes describe
If no, does the researcher explain why a framework was not used?
Methods/Designs
Is this a qualitative or quantitative research study? Is the method clearly stated in the article? Is the method appropriate for the research purpose and question? Explains the study design clearly described? Describe. Quantitative: Are the variables clearly defined? Describe
Subjects
How was the number of subjects for the study determined? Was the method for calculation of the number of subjects clearly stated? Explain
If a quantitative study was conducted did the researcher(s) clearly stated how the subjects were assigned to the study groups? Did the researcher(s) clearly describe how were subjects recruited? Describe
How did the selected recruitment process affect the outcomes of the study? How many subjects were lost during the course of the research study? Were the reasons for loss (attrition) of subjects explained? Did the researcher(s) explain how this loss affected the study outcomes? Explain
General procedures
What was actually done to the subjects in the study? Were there any ethical violations? Explain. Were research tools used in the study? Explain. Did the researcher(s) clearly explain if the tools had been tested for validity and reliability? What procedures were used to collect data? Were the procedures clearly described by the researcher(s)? If no explain.
Data Analysis
1) Did the researcher clearly explain how the data analysis was performed? Explain
2) Quantitative: What statistical measures were used to analyze the data?
3) Quantitative: What types of tables were presented? If yes were the tables clearly labeled? What data was included in the tables?
4) Qualitative: What qualitative data analysis method was used to analyze the data? Did the researcher explain this process clearly?
Results
Did the researcher clearly describe the results (outcomes) of the study?
What was the final number of subjects?
Did the study deviate from the original plan? Were all hypotheses and questions analyzed? If yes describe
Quantitative: Did the researcher(s) clearly describe statistical significance? If yes describe.
Did the researcher address the results in relationship to all research questions and/or hypotheses stated in the report of the study? If yes explain /If no describe what was not addressed.
Discussion
Did the researcher(s) clearly discuss the limitations, the outcomes, threats to internal and external validity, generalization of study results and recommendations? Describe
Do you agree with the conclusions and recommendations?
ORGANIZATION OF CONTENT
Title page
Abstract
Introduction: What should the reader expect to find in your paper? A brief paragraph 3-5 sentences.
Body: Use headings to guide the reader through the critique. Perhaps the headings should be those identified by the guidelines being utilized.
Summary Implications paragraph 1) a brief, succinct summary of your findings (your critique of the sections listed above). Were there any changes in procedures during the study that could have affected the outcome of the study? If yes explain. Were there any ethical violations? If yes explain. Did the researcher present the research logically and in a format that was understandable and usable to the reader?
Conclusion paragraph: Based on your critique do you believe this is a valid study that can be used to change practice or health care in general? Explain your answer briefly. What are your recommendations for use of this study or further research?
Reference page: This should include the research study being critiqued and any sources utilized to support the analysis / critique of the research.
The research study should be cited in the text in the introduction of your paper.
Example: A critique of the research study, Students: How Much Do They Enjoy Taking Research, conducted by Vasso and Litz (2013) was conducted. Critiquing research is vital…..The focus of the study was to identify if RN-BS student recognize the necessity to incorporate research into practice (Vasso& Litz). Other sources: Examples- If you used your textbook as a reference to support your ideas or decision regarding the appropriateness of the methodology used in the article you should cite Fain in the text of the paper and then include as a complete reference on the reference page. DO NOT INCLUDE REFERENCES THAT ARE NOT CITED IN YOUR PAPER.
If you want to refer to something that the researchers of the study discussed and it is paraphrased and cited, it is fine, in this situation, to follow the guidelines of secondary resources as outlined by APA. Example: If the researchers are discussing why a topic needs investigating and they provide data from a source and cite it you cannot cite their source on your reference page.
