Cardinal Richelieu was Louis XIII’s chief minister from 1624-1642. Cardinal Richelieu initiated policies that would strengthened the power of the monarchy. Richelieu took away the political and military rights of the Huguenots, but kept there religious privileges Richelieu sought to suppress the influence of the feudal nobility. In 1626, he abolished the position of Constable of France and ordered all fortified castles razed, excepting only those needed to defend against invaders Thus, he stripped the princes, dukes, and lesser aristocrats of important defences that could have been used against the King’s armies during rebellions. Richelieu had his royal officials, called intendants, throughout the provinces to enforce orders made strengthen the monarchy.Richelieu is also notable for the authoritarian measures he employed to maintain power. He censored the press, established a large network of internal spies, forbade the discussion of political matters in public assemblies. King Louis XIV created the palace of Versailles, which housed the King, thousands of French nobles, and was the location of the central government. King Louis XIV eliminated any real possible threat from the high nobles, by removing them from royal council, and kept them preoccupied with court life and away from politics. King Louis XIV outlawed the protestant belief.
