compare or contrast “untouchable” by kozo with “HOMELESS MAN INTERVIEWS HIMSELF” essay
* To identify Kozol’s view on homelessness, consider his rhetoric, such things as:
The words he choose
The numerous descriptive passages of tragic and horrible scenarios of homeless people
The extended paragraphs at the end which chart the overwhelmingly negative attitude of the public at large towards homeless people
Study these passages and ask yourself: What do they imply about Kozol’s attitude towards the homeless population? Is he sympathetic? Compassionate? Concerned? Does he view homeless people as helpless victims? If so, victims of what? Why does he spend so much time showing the negative attitudes of the public—which, by the way, includes you and me (Who is the public? Look in the mirror).
Is he implicitly indicting the public or accusing us of being so impatient, cruel, and insensitive? Is our refusal to see homelessness as rectifiable making the problem worse? What do you see in Kozol’s essay as answers to these questions?
Remember: The first step in critical reading is to understand accurately where the author is coming from and draw your conclusions and reactions to that. Respond to what Kozol does say or imply, not to what he doesn’t say/imply.
Then consider Bliss’s “Homeless Man interviews himself.”
Furthermore, be prepared to draw conclusions about Bliss’s attitude and/or perspective on homelessness. Remember: He has chosen homelessness; it is a preference. And he implies that there are more homeless people—vagrant types—that share his sentiments.
I would speculate that there are more of the Bliss type of homeless than we realize.
You might consider: Does Kozol’s essay take into account the Bliss type of homeless person? And vice versa, does Bliss take into account Kozol’s type? Does each author in a sense leave out or ignore the other type of homelessness? Why? What purpose does each author have? What perspective?
My purpose above is to pose questions that the texts raise so that you can pursue them for yourself. They are pertinent questions.
3. As far as organization of your essay
*Introductions and Conclusions—your essay should include a full paragraph of introduction and a satisfying conclusion. Use the template examples in PP 60-62 and 70-72. Experiment with them and choose one to imitate for your essay if you find it useful.
Thesis—state or refer directly to the two subjects—Kozol’s view, Bliss’s view—and an assertion that lays out the purpose of your essay.
Body—here you should use the block and/or the alternating pattern to present points of comparison, contrast, or both—whatever purpose you have in your paper.
