Gender and Leadership
Leadership is not influenced by gender in my opinion, leadership is about the amount of influence that an individual have on his or her followers (Fisher, 2010). I strongly disagree with the opinion aired by Clinton at the workshop on Gender and Leadership. Gender on leadership is disproportionate and in my opinion, a new generation of leadership adds up to the context of leadership in the twenty first century.
There is no gender specific management or leadership traits, leadership is a social influence, in which an individual influence followers in supporting and aiding the team in attaining the desired goals (Gasman et al, 2011). A leader communicates the vision and acts as a role model in setting direction or guiding the team.
There are a number of women leaders in the world; examples are Cristina Elisabet Fernandez de Kirchner, who is the current president of Argentina and Joyce Meyer of Joyce Meyer Ministries. Kirchner is the sitting Argentinian president and the 52nd to be elected in the highly esteemed office. Kirchner is the widow of the former president. The outstanding feature in Kirchner is that she is first woman president in the history of Argentina, and she was lawfully elected; citing the changing society relating to attitudes directed towards women. Elections were held on October 2007 in which she gathered 45.3% of the votes and the nearest rival had a gap of 22%.
Joyce Meyer was originally known as Pauline Joyce Hutchison is well known for her Christian leadership. Followers refer Meyer as a charismatic leader specializing as a speaker, bible teacher and an author. Meyer heads Joyce Meyer Ministries that is recognized globally (Meyer, 2013).
Issue of gender on leadership is debatable; attributes of leadership are either inbuilt or learnt irrespective of the gender of the leader. Leadership is influenced by traits, functions, situational interaction, vision, charisma, behavior, values, power and intelligence among others (Duerst-Lahti & Kelly, 2006).
