Let’s begin early before the deadline…
Reframing the academic paper so that it is life affirming rather than creating yet another position of higher-than-thou against a perceived lesser attitude, belief, action and/or value of “the Other”.
Begin with the perceived problem.
⦁ Define the nature of the problem.
⦁ Explain what has caused or led to the problem.
⦁ Establish who is involved.
⦁ Explain the extent of the problem.
⦁ Finally, explain the future effects if nothing changes.
⦁ Avoid fallacies.
⦁ If you can, find other communities or countries that experienced this issue.
⦁ Address the different parties’ concerns.
⦁ Explain how others view the topic and the concerns of those people when it comes to trying to solve it.
⦁ Address alternatives that those involved in the issue have put forth if any.
⦁ Does their “solution” work for everyone? Why or why not?
⦁ Does anybody receive more resources (physical, emotional, mental) than others?
⦁ Does their solution leave anybody out?
⦁ Are the alternatives fair and just to everyone?
Establish common ground.
⦁ Where and/or on what do the differing parties agree on?
⦁ What values to they have in common?
⦁ What goals do they have in common?
Establish criteria for a solution that will work for everyone involved. [Note: This may be the most challenging, but we can do it.]
Reframe the problem. Choose a fresh idea, a new path, a different way of being.
We need another way of looking at “the problem” where we can actually resolve the issue because we can see it.
NOTES from Sharif Abdullah’s TEDx Talk.
Inclusivity allows us to see another reality.
Inclusivity: A key element of all the wisdom traditions: “Do unto others as we’d have them do unto you.”
Inclusivity is not the same as inclusiveness. We’re not including others to helping others “see our truth”.
Inclusivity is the idea, the notion, the concept that I am linked to you inextricably; whether I like you or not. Linked to you regardless if I’m conscious of you or not. I’m harming you and I’m harming me at the same time. I’m helping you and helping me at the same time. This gives us a way, perhaps a new way, to see how we interact with all others.
Inclusivity gives you a lens to see a different point of view.
Advocacy of the whole: we’ve been good at looking at part of our society as a whole. And it’s not the whole. When we say the whole, we’re not talking about all progressives, brown, black, or even all people. The whole means the advocacy of the whole, all living beings.
–End of Abdullah–
Graham Hancock says that Western establishments value what he calls the “alert problem-solving state of consciousness”, one that’s good for “the more mundane aspects of science, the prosecution of warfare, commerce, politics”. However, as Hancock mentions, the over-investment in such a state has failed us, given the inequality, destruction, and pollution that has resulted.
