Johann faced a dilemma. He wanted to add some excitement to his Web site about classical composers by using dynamic effects. But he wanted the site to look “classy,” so he preferred not to use dynamic effects just for the sake of using them. However, the Dreamweaver application he used to develop his site offered him a wide variety of effects to use if he chose to.
Johann decided that rollover images in the site navigation would be a subtle way to spice up the site. He developed a navigation scheme that consisted of a row of pictures of composers, each of which would change to the composer’s name when the user’s mouse pointer passed over it.
When the site launched, however, Johann’s use of rollovers was widely criticized. One user commented, “I did not come to your site for a quiz on what composers look like.” Another said, “Cute effect, but completely annoying.” And several of the comments asked how to access the composer pages.
Johann had fallen into the common trap of assuming that his audience is as familiar with his site and subject as he is. By hiding the most important information users need to navigate his site until they pass their mouse pointers over the navigation, Johann had made his site much less useful than it could be.
