My intentions in the interview were mainly geared towards illustrating the existence of discrimination and how it affects a huge portion of the population today, and secondly to demonstrate my skills in social work practices. The conversation captured in the interview illustrates the tribulations of the individual featured prior to our meeting, a problem which is common with majority of the people today. Despite her current state and the important features that define her personality, there are a number of psychological wounds that she carries that no one can illustrate with general communication. The problem she illustrates in the interview are only part of what is present in the world today and the lessons that the interview generate serve as benchmarks giving a guideline on what should be done to address the problem. Irrespective of the fact that she was the only individual featured in the interview, the extent of the problem that face her can be used as a mirror to state what is present in the current society, hence necessitating the implementation of a number of measures to maintain a status quo which is reflective of the needs of the society.
With regard to the interview, the selection criteria which determined the person in the interview was basically random taking into consideration the nature of the person and the relatedness of their behaviour and experiences to what I ought to capture in my interview. The person in the interview was a lady I had met at my gym and I had known her for the last six months. Our meeting was generally random and the selection criteria was inspired by her changes in moods mainly caused by some of the bad days she had and her constant behaviour which illustrated to me that, she had a lot in her mind. Basing on the uniqueness of her condition, I sought to query her on her willingness to participate in my interview which was a part of my school work. She was very understanding and she agreed to participate and subsequently complied with the expectations of the interview as expected. As a social worker and part of my practices, confidentiality was discussed as part of the interview process. As illustrated earlier, the major focus of the interview was to illustrate the importance of social work in the community today and the role that social work plays in maintaining a status quo which complies with the popular expectation of the current society and demonstrating my social work skills in the process of my practice. During the interview, the deficit in social work services was clear as the client narrated her story and illustrated the bad experiences that she had prior to the interview. The process was disheartening as I came into terms with the events that are concealed in the society and how the experiences impact the lives of the affected individuals negatively, In the process i was able to demonstrate critical social work practice by listening and demonstrating good body language which made client comfortable to express herself. Through the course of the interview, the client became very emotional illustrating the ordeals that she had to deal with before obtaining some of stability in her life. With regard to the objectives of the interview, the main factor which necessitated the instigation of the interview was captured through the course of the interview. The interviewee/client was very candid on how she experienced violations which dented part of her earlier life.
The nature of the situation at hand was based on the abuse of one party who is the interviewee in this case, and the aggressors were mainly people of one gender. According to her illustration, the interviewee states that her growth and maturity was coupled by cases of abuse which affected her growth and approach to life in general. With relation to the concept of power relations, the interviewee’s tribulations were caused by her husband and a family member who abused her when she was still young. The ignorance and lack of acknowledgement of the level of abuse that the family member posed to her has been an impediment to her moving on and still haunts her. Irrespective of the fact that she wishes to move on and admits to have forgiven the family member, the thought of the actions that transpired still dents her memories. The same case applies to her ex-husband who was abusive to her and her daughter and she states that he was controlling a factor which contrasted with her free spirited approach. As a social worker, it was important for me to make my client comfortable to express her feelings and talk about her past, Although this was a struggle for me at the start of the interview process, I was able to successfully achieve that intension. The interviewee is a go getter and tends to make her own decisions rather than wait for the contribution of other parties. This aspect led to constant problems which included being locked out of their house with her young daughter. Irrespective of the fact that she acknowledges that her husband has moved on and become a better person, the effects of power relations are still evident as she states that she has resolved to stay alone and take care of her daughter.
My experience in the interview was appalling as the interviewee revealed her emotions and how the experience had change her outlook to life. (Yuen, 2007) addresses the issue of recurrent trauma illustrating that the response and effects approach to people who have experienced trauma is a determinant factor towards validating the role played by social workers. (Yuen, 2007) states that her position as a social worker has enabled her to empower people to ensure that they do not succumb to their prior trauma cases. She addresses the different interventions that different individuals, can employ to ensure that people are not affected by violence and minor occurrences that result to trauma. With respect to my experience with the interviewee, it is important to note that her resolve to move on and disregard past occurrences had contributed largely to her healing process, an approach which ought to be adopted collectively. As a social worker, the major initiative should be directed towards alleviating the experiences of individuals who suffer from abuse and violence in general which is a feature which may not be evident to many. (Ferguson &Lavalette, 2015) is of the view that the current system that defines the responsibilities of social workers has lost its meaning thus creating the assumption that social workers have lost touch of what they are supposed to do. The current systems present different scenarios which are contrasting from the initial illustrations during the presentation of the training program. With relation to the illustration above, the changes in the status of the interview, which resulted to the revelation of factors which were emotionally appealing and witnesses the effect that the experiences had on her I tended to approach her more and the role she had taken to safeguard her life and that of her daughter.
Taking into consideration my individual strength, As a social worker, I think the basis of the approach would be evaluated using (Barnoff et al, 2007) approach to effective social work. In his illustration, he is of the view that social work should be laid on the principle of anti-oppression. He states that the emphasis on anti-oppression lays the ground for equality and the freedom from domination. In the interview, the interviewee acknowledges the restraints that her partner had put against her resulted to her seeking an alternative life which was independent from her daughter’s father. Taking into consideration the illustration above, the involvement of the interview reveals the changes that ought to be effected in my social work practice. Majority of the people involved in modern day violations are ignorant of the extent of the cases and i think social workers should be able to bridge the gap and establish the root cause of these occurrences. (Waldegrave, 2009), is of the view that majority of cases relating to oppression can be attributed to self-determination. In real sense, I think majority of the problems relating to oppression are attributed to minor ethnic groups which largely disregard the plight of other people in the society at large. Irrespective of the extent that social work has covered to date, my approach to social work would be inclusive of the whole society targeting those who seem to be disengaged from the society. In addition, according to (Madigan, 2011), the common therapy approach taken today are racially discriminatory as majority of the therapists today tend to approach cases on racial grounds. This form of profiling is a major hindrance to recovery which is an issue that is addressed in my approach to social work.
(Hartman et al., 2008) gives an illustration stating the viable approach that should be adopted to address social work related to cases facing teenagers in the society. Based on my beliefs and values as a social worker and a considering factor as part of my developing practice framework, will be to practice a without not discriminating on age or the racial classification of the individual involved and confidentiality. The biases associated to social work has been a major impediment to service delivery and through my practice, my approach will be more direct and reflective of the individual’s past and how the effects of repetitive trauma affect the recovery process. As part of my practices as a social worker, I was able to be empathetic by giving my client the break when she got emotional about her past. I demonstrated good listening skills and using the tools i have as a social worker to support her by recommending some services available in the community.
(Baines, 2008), acknowledges the racial profiling in Canada illustrating how the trend has resulted to First Nation and people of colour to change their approach which has been inspired by restructuring in places of work. This trend has had a detrimental effect on the society as different individuals tend to redefine the approach to social work to accommodate the changes in the society. Throughout this course i have been able to improve on my social work practice and skills. I think the best approach that represents the beliefs and principles of a good social worker is one that illustrates respect, transparency and protection of the rights of the disadvantaged in the society. Irrespective of the anomalies that exist in the society, according to the principle used by the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW), the inclination of any social worker should not be biased.
The establishment of different social work organizations is built on the need to increase equality in service delivery and to ensure that equal standards are applied across all boards to reduce the discrimination and biases that defines today’s social system. Through the interview it emerged that issue of discrimination illustrated above is a reality. It emerged from the interview that the community today suffers from different forms of discrimination which forms the basis of the interview featured in the text below as I seek to illustrate the niche that exists in social work and how more needs to be done to maintain a society which is considerate of other people’s preferences. The emergence of the concept of individual rights as reflected in the interview has sparked a debate which seeks to define the parameters that govern discrimination cases and how the act is quantifiable to warrant the interception of different civil rights bodies which have emerged to date. According to (Alison et al, 2003), the establishment of a good family which is strong and functional is based on the ability to perceive problems and rectify the problems before they threaten the existence of the family. Additionally, she illustrates the importance of family therapy which is a proper approach to address family related problems. The above approach acts as the illustration which verifies the importance of the interview validating the context captured and its significance in addressing social problems.
