Demonstrate an analytical approach rather than just a description of the theory.

The assessment for this module has two parts. A summative presentation and a 2000 word essay. The presentation attracts a total of 20% of the overall mark and the written assignment 80%. Students are required to pass both elements.

The presentation
Having chosen ONE of the key theories or models discussed in the module, the students will give a 15 minute presentation (including questions).
The large group will be split into four and each group will present to that group and the assessors.
An assessment itenary will be given to students at the beginning of the module.
All students will be assessed using the grid given to students at the beginning of the module.
A competent presentation will contribute to increased grading.
Students may use visual aids.
If students have an LSP relevant to the presentation please discuss with Sharon Davies.

The student should cover;

The central tenets of the model, concept or theory particularly how they nature of being human is viewed.
A historical and or cultural context of the model, concept or theory.
The research and in particular seminal work related to the model, concept or theory including key authors and researchers.

Students should submit a 500-1000 word summary of their presentation with appropriate references.

The written assignment

The assignment is a 2000 word essay based on BEHAVIOURISM concept/ theory and its relevance to mental health nursing care.

Students will include the presentation summary in an appendix.

The introduction should include:

Your intentions for the module and how it is structured.

A brief definition of the concept (and any sub-concepts if relevant) and what the concept has to say about the nature of people or their health.

A brief exploration of The origins and historical and cultural significance of the concept

A brief summary of any research or seminal work which is relevant to the concept.

NB: You are not required to critically analyse the theory itself.

The main body should include:

A discussion on how the theory chosen influences mental health care.

An example from practice to demonstrate the relevance of your concept.
(this does not have to be a firsthand account)

A critical analysis of the application of the module to practice based on evidentiary literature.

The conclusion should include:

A brief summary of the main points.

What have you learnt

How this concept would be relevant to you as a mental health nurse (This should be a personal reflection) and how you might use this in future practice.

Some examples
The medical model and the use of nutrition/exercise
Social psychiatry and therapeutic community principles
Anti psychiatry and the recovery star
Humanism and Rogers core conditions
Behaviourism and exposure therapies
Buddhism and mindfulness
Social constructionism and early intervention
Attachment theory and working with challenging behaviour

The marking criteria is marked against a rubric based on the learning outcomes. If you follow the above criteria then the outcomes will be met.

In addition: (Sharons Tips)

Dont forget that this is a NURSING essay and not about therapy . It is entirely appropriate however to consider the interventions that we take from the therapeutic field. (e.g. you may consider Cognitive behavioural interventions but not cognitive behavioural therapy)

It is unlikely that you can cover all aspects of your theory, so identify an aspect of that theory to focus on.

You should demonstrate an analytical approach rather than just a description of the theory. This means using a range of literature to illuminate your work. Literature should not be used to plug gaps or introduce a different subject. I would expect at least 15 reference sources including up to date journal articles.

Make sure your referencing technique is correct. Its not worth losing marks to something which is easily rectified. Poor referencing inhibits your ability to express yourself in an academic way.

Make sure you proof read your work for spelling and grammatical mistakes and get someone else to read your work to make sure it reads well.

Do not use the first person unless you are describing actions in an example or your personal reflections.

Never make generalisations or give personal opinions about theory without backing it up.

Dont announce what you are going to write about next.
