Recession not only affects the economy but it is indeed true that it has negative impacts on the accessibility of health care services. Management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases, obesity, among others is adversely affected through the effects of recession. The reasons that causes this situation is inadequate financial capacity on the healthcare users to access to medical services provided.
The fact that economic downturn places financial risk and deter accessibility to healthcare and chronic disease is of concern to the stakeholders. Healthcare is more important in ensuring that the economy of the country is uplifted. For instance, in USA the cost of accessing to healthcare is the leading factor in bankruptcy. This indicates concerns by the citizens of promoting their own healthcare (O’Toole, 2012). Citizens take the responsibility of ensuring that they maintain their healthcare at all cost. The financial or economic crisis aggravates the situation and this deters many of them for accessing to medical care. Related factor that has resulted or contributed to poor management of chronic diseases is increased rate of unemployment. People cannot afford to cover their medical costs or manage some of the chronic disease without having the ability to meet the costs of the expensed.
Even though, there are some programs that are in place to ensuring that medical services are provided at an affordable rate such as Medicaid, there is still deterrence that has ruled many people to access such programs (Rust et al (2011). One of the deterrence is the rules and regulations that govern their operation. For a person to access to the services they are required to meet certain thresholds and this makes many of the citizens unable to access them.
Hard economic times such as recession, therefore contributes to poor healthcare provision. Various stakeholders in the healthcare including, patients, insurance companies, government, healthcare providers as well as the public in general have the duty to work in tandem to ensure that effects of economic recession are mitigated (Justice, 2011). These crucial parties contribute to the effective management of chronic diseases and should play their roles well. The quality, accessibility and affordability of medical health should not be compromised. The government has the role of ensuring that every citizen access to quality medical care at an affordable fees. The constitution requires that all citizen access to medical health regardless of the situation. It is a fundamental right and therefore, the government duty is to formulate policies that would ensure that indeed all citizens’ access to medical care and that program are in place to manage chronic diseases.
The public too has the responsibility of promoting their own health. They need to take good care of their health by upholding to preventive behaviors (Hill et al (2011). Many of chronic disease are as a result of lifestyle. The lifestyles can be changed to promote good health and this will not be a big problem during recession.
Community has an important role in improving the health of the patients and in managing chronic disease. Community involvement is important since it will not be affected by economic downturn. Community collaboration can assist in providing medical service, educating the community on preventive behaviors and providing of facilities such as transportation services to the patients (Weil & Sheppach, 2010). This initiative can impact positively on the health of the citizens. The high cost of accessing medical services is yet another reason that has impacted negatively on the provision of medical services and in management of chronic disease during recession. Therefore, this needs to be factored in the policies of the government.
Indeed, it is true that, recession impacts negatively on the health and chronic management in USA. Many citizens are unable to access to health service. High mortality and morbidity rates can be resolved through aggressive process and policies that can seal these loopholes. Recession should not be deterrence to accessibility and management of chronic diseases. Health is more important and it is right that all stakeholders give it a priority through their policies and plans.
