CHILD MORTALITY IN SAUDI ARABIA (POISONING)
Many causes of child mortality are preventable and curable. The responsibility for the well-being of an infant, particularly below the age of five, lies solely with the parent. Carelessness, irresponsibility, and negligence account for over 90 percent of child accidents, poisoning, and deaths at home. The responsibility and duty of a child’s care lie fully with the mother who is the custodian of the child irrespective of whether the child has a nanny or not. The majority of accidents that occur at home are due to misplaced priorities by the mother or parent or the nanny. However, the nanny is an individual without full responsibility for a child as young as below five years. Two solutions have been suggested to curb the issue. The first one is for drug and food authorities to make a conference that seeks to create awareness concerning the issue. The second one suggests taking action on guardians where police sue parents for negligence. This paper argues that the former is better than the latter considering that creating awareness allows parents to prevent such accidents while the latter only punishes without imparting knowledge on how to avoid such issues. Primarily, the latter only punishes after an accident occurs, which means it does nothing to prevent it from occurring.
The solution to sue parents instills fear and probes for increased care and attention to the young ones. This can cause parents and other responsible parties to increase their efforts in caring for children. This solution recognizes that the buck stops with the parent in cases of poisoning or death.
