Characteristics of Living True Spiritual Lives
Over the years, people who appear to be living true spiritual lives can be identified and singled out from Christian congregants in terms of their behavior and actions. In other words, it is more likely for an individual who is living factual devout life to be an active member in matters of spiritual restraints and bible doctrines. This essay will limit itself to how these devout restraints and the strict observance of bible doctrines can portray characteristics of true spiritual living.
The carrying out of religious disciplines has been observed to cause the much needed spiritual growth among believers and is considered as a sign of spiritual maturity for believers who have taken it upon themselves to adhere to them. What are religious disciplines? These, in author’s perspective, are the things that a person who is living true spiritual life must observe so as to grow from one level of faith to another. It has been observed that these regulations can be alienated into three broad categories, namely, the interior, the apparent and the communal disciplines. Interior disciplines are the disciplines that true spiritual living will practice without necessarily allowing others to know that the said person is practicing them. For instance, when a believer is meditating, others may not recognize this practice.
Another perfect example of interior discipline is prayer, simply and commonly referred to as communication between a believer and his God. The same way that any close relationship is characterized by consistent communication, so is any believer who would want to live true spiritual life would communicate with his Master. When a believer deny the biological needs of the body like eating and drinking, this is referred to as fasting and is also a variety of prayer. Such denials do not come automatically and hence are recognized as characteristics of individuals who are devout believers of their spiritual inclination. In addition, constant study of the word of God is a strong characteristic of a person who is living true to spiritual needs. This practice has been considered by many spiritual leaders as a firm foundation for the many who profess the faith in God.
The apparent disciplines include unfussiness, privacy, acquiescence, and service. These are disciplines that are aimed at portraying the true cost of following Christ. For instance, the public life and ministry of Jesus Christ paint vivid pictures of what it means to practice outward disciplines. In addition, Paul the Apostle rubber stamped the practice of apparent disciplines by showing us how Jesus’ humility must be emulated by all his followers (Philippians 2: 5-11). Finally, the corporate disciplines are those disciplines that are done corporately like celebration, worship and guidance. They are a mechanism in which true spiritual living is demonstrated by believers coming together to share out their spiritual life experiences together.
Bible doctrines, on the other hand, contribute to large extent the growth of a believer. The two main bible doctrines include the observance of the Lord’s Table and baptism. Many believers partake of the Lord’s Table as a reminder of what Jesus did several years ago and thus help them to hold on their faith. Baptism is a means of identifying with Christ in his death and resurrection. And these, in my opinion, would be true characteristics of those who live in true spiritual lives
