Thematic Focus
The main objective of the assignment is to critically assess the central arguments within a published academic paper within the international business literature. Students are free to choose which paper they select but it must be a published paper within an academic journal, not a book or book chapter. Students are free to either select a recent paper or to choose a well known seminal paper which has strongly influenced the field of global business strategy. The paper selected must be oriented towards international business and have a connection and strong implications for global business strategy issues. Papers can be either theoretical or empirical in nature.
The types of issues might be concerned with the following types of strategic international business issues, inter alia, theoretical concepts for understanding global business strategy; the current global business environment for FDI; foreign market entry modes; HQ-subsidiary issues; international entrepreneurship; ‘born globals’; nature of emerging markets; emerging market multinationals; and ethical issues surrounding international business. Assessment Criteria
The main aim of this assignment is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the main arguments forwarded within their chosen text and to critically evaluate the merits of the author’s viewpoint. Students should outline and provide a synthesis of the main arguments within the text and then critically assess the validity of these arguments in light of empirical evidence on contemporary globalization processes and those of other academic observers. A simple repetition of the views of the authors is not encouraged. A key aspect of the assignment is for student’s to critically reflect upon and evaluate the main strengths and weaknesses within their chosen text in light of their other module readings and current empirical evidence. For those examining key or seminal papers, a key element of the discussion should concern an assessment of the continued relevance or otherwise of the paper. Students are expected to draw upon additional literature to substantiate their arguments within their essays.
