Becoming a Great Business Leader

A great business leader should posses several features. They include self-discipline, willingness to learn, and passion.

SELF DISCIPLINE

Self-discipline is the key to success. It forces you to do things others do not like to do, going the extra mile. In order to become a successful businessperson, it is true that you cannot get anywhere without creativity and vision. However, something even more important than that for the success of a business is self-discipline. Not many could survive without it in today’s business environment. Whenever you are working for your own business, you have the discipline to spend a lot on work, on the least fun parts of running the business. For example, planning, financing, and bookkeeping.

After all, if you want to be your boss, you have to sacrifice your fun time to do something that others will not do. When you are the boss, there is no one there to keep you at work, and there is no one else to force you to do the extra work. There will not be any short-term consequences. But in the long run, you will have to pay the price for skipping work, just to give yourself some time off to do something fun. Some business owners might think that ‘just this once’ will not hurt, and later when ‘just this once’ becomes a daily occurrence, the business has few chances of being successful.

WILLINGNESS TO LEARN

You do not have to hold a secondary education diploma in order to be successful in your business. In fact, many successful businesspersons without a secondary education made themselves millionaires. They have become what they are today, because they are willing to learn. In order to be successful, you will always have questions to ask. You will have to keep yourself interested and always accept new ideas and knowledge. In today’s fast-paced business environment, your original business idea will be constantly changing, given the rapid changes in technologies and ways of doing business. Every little detail or information brings you closer to your goals. Willingness to learn is very crucial in today’s business. As a businessperson, you have to realize the differences between you and your competitors.

Learn from your competitor’s strengths and success, and learn from your own weaknesses and mistakes. To learn means that you will need to change the wrong things you are doing in your business and do what your competitors are doing best. Do not be afraid of failure; fail first and then you can conclude it is the wrong way of doing your business. Learn from your mistakes, move on, and make changes until you get it right. “Ford is today known for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an instant success. In fact, his early businesses failed and left him broke five times before he found the successful Ford Motor Company.”(The Henry Ford)

BE PASSIONATE

Be passionate with what you do. Choose something that sparks your creativity, that you enjoy to talk about and puts a smile on your face. Steve Jobs once said, “People with passion can change the world for the better.” He said he would rather work as a bus boy, until when he would figure out what he was passionate about; and passion meant everything to him. (Thursday, B)You cannot simply be successful if you are not passionate about doing what you do.

Success might be easy once you have found out that you love what you do, because it usually motivates us to work hard to achieve our goals about things we love.  Your overall work performance will be maximized and only if you are doing something you enjoy doing and are passionate about. If you are just passionate enough, you will not mind the fact that you spend more than 8 or 9 hours each day to work overtime. Again, it is simply because you truly love what you do.

CONCLUSION

Having a great vision and being creative are important features that a great business should possess, but what is more important for a successful business leader to have is the combination of self-discipline, willingness to learn, and passion. Everyone must have something that he or she is passionate about; just keep doing what you love and you will become successful and get the best result from it. Make sure to always keep learning and accepting new ideas and make appropriate changes accordingly. More importantly, you should always work hard towards your goal.
