DATA GATHERING

Give careful thought to how you are going to collect the data for this. Data can be of a quantitative and/or a qualitative nature. Haphazardly collected impressions, memories, and anecdotes do not constitute convincing data. Consider keeping a log, or diary; notes in the style of participant observation, or manager researcher; and/or holding interviews. This is meant to be `toe in the water` research rather than to impose the full burden of field research. What is important is that your analysis is supported by valid and reliable evidence.

Review the case study “Sounds at Sea”. The case study details the requirements for the exam.
You may prepare standard business memo. All pages must be a minimum of an 11pt font with 1.5 line spacing and appropriate margins. You may use a maximum of 6 pages content. More content usually doesn’t mean a better memo! You are expected to utilize the full set of skills developed in your MBA studies.

To create a comparison/contrast essay of

Comparing and contrasting the poetry, you need to analyze the poetry fully showing, what each poem means, what the text is conveying, and what each poem is saying fully. The essay should be thoroughly researched using a wide range of appropriate library and Internet sources. Where possible you should cite relevant examples to illustrate the point(s) you are making

Essay marking scheme:
1) Selection and justification of an appropriate food issue (20% of marks)
•Clearly outline the subject matter and scope of your essay, provide some introductory data and explain why the issue you have chosen to write about is so important. Finish by clearly stating the aims of your essay.

2) Balanced analysis and discussion of the issue using a variety of appropriate sources of information (50% of marks)
•This section should be based on your research into the subject – not simply your opinions. You need to present evidence (ie references) to support the statements you make, and make sure that what you write fits in with the aims you stated in your introduction. Make sure you discuss the issues surrounding your topic: what are the advantages and disadvantages, who benefits, who loses, are there any problems and if so, can they be resolved, etc. You are asked to write a balanced analysis so do not simply approach your topic from one viewpoint.

3) Conclusions (20% of marks)
•Here you should summarise the key points and arguments contained in your essay. In effect, the conclusions should be the answers to your aims. You should not introduce new information into your conclusion

4) Overall presentation (10% of marks)
•Things you should pay attention to include correct use of references, correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, appropriate sentence and paragraph construction and an appropriate scientific writing style. See your key skills communication book for more detail

This paper is a brief exploration of the diary of President Rutherford B. Hayes, who won the controversial election of 1876. Hayes kept a diary for most of his life. The diary is digitized and fully search-able. You will be using quotes from the diary and citing them. The citations are a major part of your grade.

Use a basic essay format. Start with an INTRODUCTION. What are you doing with the paper. You might briefly summarize his presidency. Wikipedia is a great place to find basic information. Then use the diary website. You should use 2 quotes from volume 2 of the diary (1861-1865, Civil War Years) and 2 quotes from volume 3 (1865-1881, his years in office). The diary is SEARCHABLE — so you can focus on specific names or topics. Enter in search terms on the website. Here is a partial list of possible topics: WAR, BATTLE, GENERAL, COMMAND, UNION, GEORGE CROOK (*for the war years) — ELECTION, PRESIDENT, ANDREW JOHNSON, SOUTH, RECONSTRUCTION, BLACKS, NEGROES, ECONOMY, RAILROAD, CIVIL SERVICE, WHEELER, GRANT, CIVIL RIGHTS, FORCE ACT, CURRENCY, SHERMAN, FOREIGN POLICY, LATIN AMERICA, EVARTS (*for his years as president or in Congress).

Each quote should be in a unique paragraph. So 4 quotes, 4 paragraphs (plus introduction and conclusion) = 6 paragaphs for the paper @ 2-3 pages max or <750 words total for the entire paper.

*TRY TO RELATE THE QUOTES TO EACH OTHER IN SOME WAY. THE STUFF ABOUT THE WAR CAN ACTUALLY BE RELATED TO STUFF FROM HIS POLITICAL YEARS, IF YOU ARE CREATIVE. 4 RANDOM QUOTES WITH NO ATTEMPT AT LINKING THEM TOGETHER WILL NOT PRODUCE A GOOD PAPER.

Finally, please include a brief CONCLUSION. What did we learn about Hayes from his diary? Was he a good leader? Was he thoughtful? What values were important to him?

–Who is morally responsibility for each aspect of the disaster and what should have been done at each step along the way? (You should use the virtues from the course in making your argument.)
–Was the virtue of justice upheld by the various parties involved in this situation? If so, how? If not, how not?
–Were the individuals who live in the area treated fairly? Were they given the information the needed to make decisions concerning their safety?
–What values are revealed in the actions of the primary groups involved?
–Were the financial settlements reached fair overall? Fair to the company involved? Fair to the residents of the area?
–At the heart of this case is human use of natural resources. What does this case reveal about how we should value such resources? How do the virtues we have discussed relate to our treatment of natural resources as revealed in this case?

Requirements:
The paper is due on Monday, February 18 at the beginning of class.  The paper should be approximately 1200-1500 words in length, or approximately 4-5 double-spaced pages with standard margins.  The paper must have a clearly stated thesis which is then argued for in the body of the paper.  The paper must have a thesis and an argument in support of that thesis.

A refereed or peer reviewed publication is one that has been blind reviewed – that is, the reviewers do not know who wrote the proposed publication and the author of the publication does not know who has reviewed their work – by at least two qualified peer reviewers. Almost all library books and journal articles found in university data bases have been peer reviewed. If you have any doubts contact your tutor. So, this will take some effort on your part.

************************************************** SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS: Begin the assignment with a brief paragraph (three to five sentences) explaining your response to the question chosen, either one of the above questions or an alternate that you have discussed with your tutor. Whatever question you choose to examine, clearly explain your position on the question in the first paragraph of the assignment. This is essentially a statement of thesis upon which you will build your research essay (Assignment 3). Note that this thesis statement must be fairly specific.
