This is a mini-research paper, in which you use targeted research to evaluate the authenticity of a feature film about colonial history. Your task is to watch the film with a critical eye and evaluate it as you would any other historical source.

 

First, select a movie from the list below.  These films should be widely available, either at the Wesleyan Library or at Blockbuster, Netflix, Amazon, ITunes, or other movie-rental stores.  The professor may have some of them in his personal library, so ask him if you want to borrow them.  Watch your selected movie carefully, taking notes as you watch.  Compile a thorough outline of the main characters, themes, and plot developments.  Then, think about how the film’s central issues and how it portrays them.   For guidance on film analysis from an historian’s perspective, read the attached excerpt from Paul B. Weinstein’s “History Written With Lightning.”

 

Your next step is to research the actual historical world the film presents by analyzing primary and secondary sources. Attached is a partial list of good primary and secondary sources available in our library or on the internet.  Use this research to evaluate the presentation of the past in the film.  In fact, after doing this research, you may want to watch the film again with fresh eyes in order to make an effective comparison between the film and “reality.”

 

Since this is a relatively short paper, you should focus your comparison on a few major issues.  For instance, you may want to evaluate the film’s portrayal of technology and spirituality, or gender and sexuality, etc.  This will make the task more manageable and less intimidating

 

Remember, your basic mission is to compare and contrast the film with the information in the primary sources, and in the process to evaluate the accuracy of the movie.  Make sure to discuss both the ACCURACIES and INCCURACIES in the film, and then to come to some overall balanced judgment on whether the film earns a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” from historians.

 

You may write about either (or both) of the Marlowe plays, or either (or both) of the Jonson plays.  You’d have to do fast work to write about The Knight of the Burning Pestle.  You might focus on a minor character or characters.  For example, in Marlowe’s Edward II, the character of Isabella, his wife, is of interest for a number of reasons.  Because Edward has abandoned her for Gaveston, she feels like a scorned woman, and yet she also gives up herself and her power to Mortimer, despite her son’s pleas.  Mortimer Jr. also offers a great subject for analysis, since he’s clearly a scheming manipulator (see 5.4.48-71 for his own description of how he disguised his ambition) and yet faces the same fate (if not the same style of execution) as Edward (see 5.6.59-66).

On the other hand, I don’t want to rule out major characters and themes.  Just remember that even these longer papers do not offer you infinite space; don’t choose a subject more appropriate for a book.  If you’re interesting in a broad theme (such as Jonson’s interest in disguise and deception in his comedies), you need to narrow it so that you can develop your topic fully.  For example, in Volpone, which is a play about how to scam people out of their money or virtue, you might focus on how economic concerns infiltrate language about every subject, even when the speaker is disguising (or attempting to disguise) those concerns.  Or you might focus on one character’s use of disguise or one character’s self-deception.

If you enjoy Jonson’s Epicene, you might analyze his use of the language of misogyny; is he satirizing the nature of women or of misogynists or of both?  Or you might want to write about what Jonson’s play suggests to us about marriage in this period.  The ideal marriage described in most conduct books depicts a husband in control of everything, including his chaste, silent, and obedient wife.  What do you think the play suggests about the real state of marriage in Elizabethan/Jacobean society?  Or should we expect a comedy to present us with an exaggerated picture of reality?
