Cost and Value in Management

The Research Paper must demonstrate the understanding of new learning in project management and how it relates to cost and value management. This assignment should be six to eight pages (not including the title and reference pages) and should integrate the reading, multimedia, and class discussions. It is mandatory to have research from the classroom text, as well as at least three scholarly sources from the Internet or Ashford Online Library to support your views.

Discuss the importance of work packages to support the creation and use of the WBS.
Examine how to establish a cost and schedule performance measurement baseline.
Present examples of EVM and how it will help the PM understand project status.
Examine how the PM uses project control charts to show project status and present value.
Recommend an effective change management process to ensure a successful project.

American labor relations during the Gilded Age.

The purpose of this exercise is to provoke analytical thought and insight concerning American labor relations during the Gilded Age.  Using the Homestead Lockout and Strike of 1892 as a guide, students should be able to describe the conditions most industrial workers faced in the late-19th century as well as discuss the rationale used by business owners to keep their employees in a subservient position.

“The right of the workingman to combine and to form trade unions is no less sacred than the right of the manufacturer to enter into associations and conferences with his fellows.” –Andrew Carnegie

1) How did the Homestead lockout and strike of 1892 impact the labor movement of the late-19th century? In your response, please define the ideas of laissez-faire and social Darwinism as they specifically relate to this event.

2) In what ways does this strike symbolize the growing frustrations between labor and management during the Gilded Age?  In your response, please discuss the struggle for control over the workplace–in particular, the rights that the working classes believed they deserved, and management’s contrary attitude toward those perceptions.

3) Since this event occurred during America’s transition into an industrial society, how did it’s outcome affect working conditions in the United States over the course of the next century?  In other words, what consequences of this struggle between management and labor can we still see today?

tour of the human brain

Pretend you are a tour guide giving a tour of the human brain. Describe the tour you would give, highlighting the major parts of the brain, the control centers and their functions, and the importance of the brain as part of the central nervous system. Conclude your tour with a description (fictional or true) of what happens to a person when damage occurs to a part of the brain

phychology

The field of psychology is incredibly broad, covering many aspects of human behavior and development. For this research project, you are going to choose an area of psychology that you find particularly interesting. You then conduct research to learn more about your topic area. Finally, you summarize what you learned from the research by writing a report that describes the topic and its relation to the field as a whole.

Gender Based Discrimination

Assignment:

Your topic is a current problem in the world.  After narrowing down your topic to a specific concern with the problem, your paper would then present two opposing viewpoints, then a compromise between the two viewpoints that would potentially solve the problem.

You may if you wish use the same issue that you explored in the first paper.  However, remember that this is a separate paper and different assignment.  Follow instructions for this paper closely.  If you do use the same topic as the first paper, you will be able to condense and revise the first paper to fit only section IV of this paper.  You will still have to conduct new research for the paper and write a considerable amount to cover the rest of the paper.

The major thesis for this paper will be the compromise solution that you develop between the two opposing viewpoints which will come near the end of your paper. However, before you get to this compromise, you must present the claim that each opposing side makes.  These will be like mini versions of the thesis in the first paper that we wrote in the class.

The paper should have one cohesive voice and tone throughout despite looking at opposing viewpoints.  You should not show bias toward any particular side of the argument. To use the Rogerian arrangement, you must be able to present both sides objectively.  You are not trying to win the argument or convert people to agree with your views; you are trying to get two sides, those who agree with you and those who agree with your opponent, to compromise. You must avoid attacking language that would sound morally superior to your opponent.

You should not choose a topic that is so controversial that you will not be able to be objective about it, i.e. religion, abortion, right to life, etc. You want your topic to be one where there is a problem and a variety of solutions, possibly controversial.  You should write your paper looking at two viewpoints (yours and your opponent’s) and try to find a solution you can both agree on.

Evaluate a case of Globalisation

Topic title: Globalisation

Consider the ways in which issues of globalisation as discussed on the module are represented in a particular case. This case could relate to an organisation, an event, legislation, or a particular policy. You should not choose any of the examples that we have covered on the course, but you can choose any other case that you are interested in.  MacDonald, HSBC, IKEA, and Coca cola

Protocol:

 Select a manageable number of texts (c. 2-6) which demonstrate your case. You may choose different genres of texts, including written reports or legal documents, websites, TV commercials, blogs etc. Make sure you provide links and other relevant information to enable us to access the material.

 With reference to the literature, explain what aspect of globalisation you focus on and why you think this is an issue.

 Critically analyse and discuss the ways in which globalisation is reflected, enacted and/or challenged in your chosen case.

 You should situate your analysis with reference to other published research papers on your theme/issue.

 Conclude by highlighting what insights about globalisation can be gained by your case.

Planning

Suppose an error in planning, such as too-high production targets, has led to problems. Suppose further that it is not possible to revise the plan, such as when a commitment is made to another organization to supply a certain quantity on a certain date. What type of controls can be used to solve the problem? More generally, can controls compensate for problems in planning? Create a fictional scenario to illustrate your answer. Describe the plan and explain what is wrong with it and the problem that resulted. Describe the control that can be applied and the expected outcome.
