Revisions to the Workers Compensation Benefits
Problem Description
Fitch Manufacturing wants to redesign its employee manual so that it is more
usable for its employees. The Human Resources (HR) department has received
many complaints from employees that the policies and procedures outlined in the
manual are difficult to understand, and the HR staff spends much of its time
explaining company policy to employees. They want to begin with the workers’
compensation policy because it is one of the most confusing sections of the manual
and because management is concerned that employees aren’t taking full advantage
of the policy.
Part 1: Document Redesign (40%)
Your task in this part of the assignment is to consolidate, rewrite, and redesign the
workers’ compensation information sheet with the goal of making the final, single
document more useful for its end users. To do this, you first need to analyze the
users—how they will use this information and in what contexts. You then need to
inventory all the information on the original, decide how to cluster it, decide how
to organize the clusters, and decide how to convey the consolidated information in
an accessible, professional manner. You may format and design the document in
any way that you think makes it more usable for its users.
Part 2: Rhetorical Analysis (60%)
In this part of the assignment, your task is to write a rhetorical analysis in which
you explain to me the decisions you made in consolidating, rewriting, and
redesigning the workers’ comp information sheet. To do this, you need to discuss
the primary (Fitch Manufacturing employees) and secondary (management, HR,
legal, employees’ families, etc.) audiences, their attitudes, knowledge, and needs,
and how your revision addresses those. You also need to discuss the context in
which these instructions will be used and how you have addressed the constraints
of that context. Finally, you need to discuss the design choices that you have made
in redesigning this information sheet, from content to style to typography and other
text elements. The rhetorical analysis should be about two pages long in memo
format.
